If the rush of battle had not infected his mind so readily than he would have never seen it.
Quickly and without care the Knight’s blade changed direction. Instead of sailing towards Lucian’s chest as he had the weapon was pointed towards the left where Lucian’s weapon had once been. It was not for a parry, Lucian knew that, for there was no way for the Knight to parry in that direction.
He thought maybe for a second the Black Knight was trying to cut his arms. Yet such a thing did not make sense for there was a shaft of wood that the Peasant Squire could easily bring to deflect the weapon. It would ruin the strike but the Knight seemed certain just like he that this was the final strike.
Then he saw it. At the immediate right of Lucian was a jaw that was opening so wide that it threatened to eat his whole face. If he had to guess such a creature was no simple zombie but something far more deadly and would surely leave a mark upon him.
The meaning of this move was obvious. This creature, this Ghoul, was trying to attack Lucian at the moment he was most distracted. Maybe it was some lost sense of chivalry returning or maybe the creature had gained some sort of twisted sense of honor, but he was now protecting Lucian from an aggressor who seeked to kill him.
Surely the undead was under the control of the Necromancers. Maybe, in their moment of fighting against Adok, their grip had loosen enough upon the undead that his sheer force of will and devotion to honor forced him to attack his ally. After all, such was the tactic when it came to honor duels.
Lucian felt the scythe and everything slow down. His mind realized all of this just as the weapon was about to strike at the neck of the undead. His foe was not facing him and instead defending him against a transgressor. In a sense, to strike his opponent now when he had learned all this would be a great dishonor.
Then again, no one would know. His standing within the hierarchy of Bretonnia would still expand massively upon recovering not just the corpse of the Grail Knight, but bringing the heads of the Necromancers involved within this. And lastly, Morr does not care how the undead are put to rest. He only cares that they be placed to rest.
With a simple move Lucian could bend the strike and have it hit the armor of the Undead Knight. But he would only do so if he was to spare him for this moment of honor and chivalry.
>Finish Him
>Divert the Strike
