>>5962553The inquisitor looks like he just sucked on a particularly sour lemon. Oh, you just blurted that out. Oops.
“You know, that isn’t a question people ask a lot. Good reason too. How about I answer with another question or two? What are the most common ways a Stanger can appear in this world?”
He’s not immediately turning hostile, that’s probably a good sign, “That would be possession, rebirth, and transportation, correct?”
He blinks, “Huh, you did your homework, yeah that’s right. They can either take over someone's body, the original still trapped within, a Stranger reborn to a normal mother and father can gain memories of their life on Earth, or they can simply appear as they were on Earth. You can see how your question is getting a bit more complex right?”
You nod, “I would rather my body not be hijacked from under me, yes.”
“Even if the person who steals your life is a complete altruist?”
You nod again.
“Right, other than that you’ve seen what a Cheat Skill can do already. Would you want someone with that kind of power getting the influence a high-ranking adventurer can provide? Like, I don’t know,” He clearly does in fact know, “direct access to nobility and royalty, like your family, and no one powerful enough to stop them should they get a bit ambitious.”
You nod again, but another thought comes to you, “Your statements are sound, but you do know it is startlingly obvious when you’re trying to manipulate someone?”
He pauses for a moment before he pouts. The inquisitor, the adult man, pouts, “Is it really?” He sounds on the verge of heartbreak.
You take back any previous mental comments, he wouldn’t last a day in high society, “I thought that manipulation was a skill all inquisitors are good at. Is that not true?”
“You don’t have to say it like that!” He throws his arms up into the air, “Look if, and that’s a very big if, we run into a situation like that, you’ll leave it to me. Understood?”
“Of course,” You can't help but let out a sophisticated chuckle, not a giggle.
“Whatever, I’m going to go do something else,” With that the inquisitor departs, probably to go cry or something. You bid him farewell, as is only proper. It’s only when he departs that you realize something important, he left you with the plate and glass! And you don’t even have a maid to take care of it! Ugh, how ignoble.
You’re still on the train, you still need to pass the time.
