>>5963301“Your Highness?” A deep and gravelly voice asks as you close the door behind you and take in the brisk air.
“Do I know you?” You ask the elderly man. He looks rather old, with his white hair and unkempt beard. But that’s not what your eyes are drawn to, that would be the small rabbit tail he possesses. This man is a demihuman, a descendant of the primordial people of the time before the Goddess.
“I suppose not, my time was well before yours. Sir Bartholomew Abram at your service,” he says though he does not stop leaning on the railing to bow.
“Sir? Are you a knight?”
“Indeed, I am. Knighted a long time ago,” He pauses to breath, “When this country was a much different place,” As the man says that, his gaze again turns to the land behind you.
You don’t know how long you stand in silence next to the old knight. The summer air should be hot but the overcast clouds and the wind from the front of the train give the air a soft chill. The scenery is rather nice too, you watch as farms and hamlets slowly congregate as the train gets slower and slower before stopping in a nondescript town you may never visit again.
The old man grunts, “Should probably head back to my seat, stop’ll be here soon. Best wishes to you, Your Highness, maybe we’ll see each other again someday.” And with that, the old knight departs to somewhere further in the train.
You’re not exactly sure how long you stay alone out here, but by the time you return to your cabin, it’s getting dark, and many of the passengers have departed. At least your head is clear even if nothing of note happened back there. And when you’re ready to sleep you find that it is a dreamless one.
You awake past midmorning, the curtains keeping the sun from your eyes but the noise from people entering the train wakes you. Very carefully you turn your pillow over to hide the drool on it and prevent Sophia, who you unboxed the night before, from ripping it.
