“I am a Viltrumite-“ Before you can utter an other word, Hawkgirl slaps the table and rises up.
“What?!” She yells. She looks at everyone else in the room. “They’re a race of warmongers.” She says, pointing at you. “They built a ruthless empire on the back of their extraordinary strength!”
The statement raises eyebrows and dissipates smiles from the table.
You raise your hands. “Please, let me finish.” You say. “Long ago, my species sought to spread technological enlightenment among the stars, though our methods became more and more extreme. I and many others were not in agreement with these methods.”
Hawkgirl shakes her head. “Those are lies! Your people were in search of thralls and resources from the get-go. You never cared!”
Now, you raise your voice. Not too much, as to not appear unhinged, but enough to seem irritated by her truthful claim. “No! That is what my people sought after we began our expansion. Our ruler, Lord Argall, truly wished to protect others from the dangers of the galaxy while offering them useful technology in exchange for paltry tributes to maintain our protection.”
You now take up a dejected stare. “Not too long after, Lord Argall was betrayed and killed. Our people fell into a terrible civil war in order to root out weakness from our ranks. I fled with a few others. As far as I know the Empire still stands far away into the galaxy, a husk of what it once was, but I no longer seek anything from them.”
You look at each member of the League here seated. There are looks of trust, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Superman and J’onn seem to empathize. The green lantern is deep in thought, Batman has not removed the scowl on his face since you began your speech and Hawkgirl seems clearly livid.
“All I want is a peaceful life, here, among a civilization that is not embroiled in galactic matters, where I do not have to be judged for the species I belong to.”
The room grows silent. John Stewart speaks. “Hawkgirl. If Nao’Lann’s intentions were to conquer us and make us a part of this Empire. Why would he come alone? Why risk that when his people could clearly take us on with just a few hundred of their soldiers?”
Hawkgirl shakes her head. “It’s not about conquest. No empire conquers a planet with a frontal assault without knowing anything about them! He could be a spy!”
The people here seated look back at you, some suspicion present in their expressions.
You cross your arms. The Thanagarian is making it hard considering her own position.
>Confront her publicly, make them suspect her. “As could you! I do not remember the Thanagarians being united into a peaceful state.”
>Try to reduce the tension here, being conflictive will lead to the League being more suspicious. “I understand your concerns, I truly do. But I have utterly cut off my ties with Viltrum. Please, all I ask is for a place to live in free of my species’ past.”
