You turned to her, and she nodded, looking a bit nervous. The lights in the hallway began to flicker, and you watched as a cluster of blue cubes formed between her hands. After a few seconds, the cubes shaped themselves into a pixelated bird. It leapt out of her hands and onto the ground. You all watched as it hopped around, chirping cheerily and pecking at the ground every now and again.

Prowler’s eyes went from it to Ember. She cleared her throat.

“I can make bigger, more impressive stuff, but that requires more energy, and we’re in a clinic, so…”

Prowler held up a hand.

“You’re pretty young. You sure you’re ready for a life of crime?”

Ember swallowed hard, but she didn’t shy away from the Prowler’s intense glare.

“I’m just trying to survive, man. Things…haven’t really gone my way ever since I partnered up with Arcade, so I’m trying my luck with you guys. If I have to prove myself, I’ll do it. Whatever it takes.”

Prowler made a noise that was halfway between a thoughtful hum and a growl.

“You talk a big game, but all I see is a scared little girl who jumps ship as soon as shit gets real. You should’ve seen that Arcade was gonna use you from the beginning. You’re gonna need to be smarter than that if you want to roll with us.”

Ember’s cheeks went red, and from the way that her eye twitched and her jaw clenched, you could tell that she was holding back an explosive outburst.

“I was smart enough to take a good deal when I saw it.”

Ember replied through gritted teeth.

“Smart, or desperate? You probably didn’t have a whole lot of other options.”

Ember’s nostrils flared, but she demonstrated remarkable self-control for someone with her temper.

“Look, you guys are all I’ve got right now. And I’m not dumb enough to make enemies of you guys when the cops are out there looking for me.”

“Right. But what about when you find a ‘better offer’? How loyal are you gonna be when someone flashes a fat stack of cash in front of your face? How do we know that you won’t screw us later, when we went through all the trouble of keeping your ass out of trouble? You’re not the only one risking your neck here.”

Ember nodded, her lips pressed firmly into a thin line.

“I know. I know. You’re just gonna have to trust me, I guess.”

“No, I don’t. I don’t even know you, and I don’t even think the Huntsman does either.”

Prowler spat back. You were about to come to Ember’s aid, when Prowler continued his rant.

“But lucky for you, there’s an opening on the team’s hit squad, and you just might be able to fill it. I’m gonna be taking a backseat to the team’s normal operations for a while. And with some training and guidance, you might be able to help us out.”

Your eyes went wide as the meaning of Prowler’s words sank in.

“Prowler, what are you talking about?”

She gave you a cautioning look.

“Don’t worry, I’ll leave out the stuff about his ‘menacing aura’ and all that.”

Despite herself, she snorted a laugh and shook her head. “When you say it like that, it sounds so silly.”

“It’s a gift.” you said with a shrug.

“It feels more like a curse at times. But…now is not one of those times.”

She gave you a slight, genuine smile, and patted you on the back.

“By the way, that is a very nice suit. When did you have the time to put it together?”

“Well, I had to do something while you were moping around, didn’t I?”

That earned you a swift punch on the shoulder that left the affected muscles with a dull, throbbing pain. She wasn’t angry though. Not really.

“Come on. Let’s get this over with.” she said, nodding her head towards the end of the hall and prompting you to follow.

When Ana brought the issue up with the others, you couldn’t help but notice how she left out the details about the vulnerability and fear she felt from the Family member. You’d gathered everyone, from the Desperados to the available Morlocks, and they listened with rapt attention. Not a question or a quip came out of anyone’s mouth until Anastasia was finished explaining. For once, no one was smiling. Not even The Deep One, whose fishy features seemed to be frozen in a permanent malicious grin at most times.

“So? What do we think?” you asked.

Surprisingly, the Prowler was the first to speak up.

“Baiting multiple crime families into fighting each other was one thing, and even then, it was pretty damn hard to pull off. I’m not getting into a war of attrition with the one guy that everyone was so scared of that they intentionally left him out of the fight. If you want to take a shot at him, I suggest that you make sure that you can do it on your first try.”

Cat didn’t say anything, but it looked like she mostly agreed with the sentiment. Flint would undoubtedly back you up if you landed yourself in hot water with the Family, but you didn’t want to do anything that might attract extra attention to the Desperados or any of their acquaintances.

“I don’t know if it’s such a good idea to go snooping around after we just kicked the hornet’s nest.” Glass offered. “They’re gonna be extra careful going forward. At least for a little while.”

“But it sounds like he’s going to expect something from us when we return from the mission.” Iara added. “Wouldn’t it be better if we just…delayed our departure for a while?”

“White Rabbit’s been recruiting. She wants to pull a heist, but she’s not getting any takers.” Cat explained.

Prowler actually lifted his head up to look her square in the face. “Nope. I’m not pulling a job with that lunatic.” Prowler argued. “She’s gonna get us caught.”

“She’s not crazy, Pow Pow. She’s just…eccentric.” Felicia said delicately. “Dodson has particular tastes, and she just needs a crew that can keep up with her…peculiarities.”

You’ve honestly never seen Cat dance around an issue so much.

You and the others exchanged glances. He wasn’t entirely wrong, but he wasn’t exactly right, either. Controlling that suit would offer him a great deal of wealth and power, but to think that he could use it to rival THE Kingpin? That might be a bit of a stretch.

But hey, it wasn’t your job to correct the man’s far fetched ambitions. You just had to grab the suit for him and collect your paycheck. Someone would stop him eventually, like they always did.

At least, that’s what you told yourself.
