He lives in her brain, gives her advice, and uses snake magic(?) to make sure she doesn't die. He is also a manipulative prick who undermines Charlotte's decisions, wipes her memory, and works to ensure her dependence on him-- all to fulfill his own obscure aims.
As the quest has gone on, though, it's become increasingly clear that Richard, while still unpleasant and manipulative, is less of a evil mastermind and more of a beleaguered misanthropic wagecuck. Employed in the snake equivalent of a call center, he's deeply frustrated by his grueling 24/7 babysitting job and his mandated emotion-draining wage cage. He's also irritated by the fact that he's possibly (probably?) the reanimated consciousness of Charlotte's dead dad, which means he needs to deal with a lot of unproductive feelings of "love" and "attachment" and "protectiveness." His attempts to stifle these down have led to his, er, ritual sacrifice to the snakelike god of reality.
Fortunately, Richard can't die. Unfortunately for him, he has been reborn as "Nice Richard," who is exactly like Richard except warm, open, affectionate, and vocally regretful of his past bad behavior. He claims to be totally fine with the fact that Charlotte's warped his psyche into the image of the father she never really had, and he also claims to be totally supportive of whatever stupid misadventures she's planning on next. He can sit back and relax now. He has no more secrets to hide.
...Right?
