That… was extremely odd Lucian had to admit. Coming just that little bit closer to the lone bovine the knight observed its brown fur. It looked short and hard, just as it should, yet he did not fully trust his vision yet.
The animal continued eating the leaves without care as it was not being observed. A dullard of a breed just like all its other kin, such creatures barely even caring what was happening around them. All this creature really cared about was if it was being fed and where it could sleep. Even something as simple as safety was gone for it has lived among mankind for so long.
As he stood before the cow Lucian was able to study it just that little bit more. It was a milking female, the animal still having a full utter of milk. The painful issue here was that if the cow was not milked in the next few days, then she will dry up and likely cost the family a fortune.
While it has not happened to Lucian he has seen it happen to another branch of his family. Three of his cousins died that winter because they could not get enough milk from the rest of the cows within the village.
He inspected the eyes and found them to be the deep black that was always expected of their kind. The unthinking state of its being evident as he looked deeply in an unthinking abyss.
It was here, as Lucian decided to stop judging with his eyes and reached down towards its pelt. Beyond Lucian’s expectations it was soft like a cat’s fur.
With a gentle movement the cow raised its head and moved away from Lucian. At first Lucian thought it was simply moving because he touched it, but as Nightshade closed upon the animal it moved again. Any thoughts of that the Black Knight was herding the cow was dashed as the beast walked from Lucian’s left to the right. There, a path that the Knight Errant did not notice before.
Lucian did not even entertain any other ideas. The Knight simply followed the odd cow as it walked gently through the forest as if it had always been here. He knew that there might have been trouble afoot, yet no concern could be felt.
With every step the forest grew more and more alive. The normal sounds of a forest became deathly silent as Lucian saw a ray of sunlight among the trees.
It was here Lucian watched as the cow walked around a tree, yet the animal did not appear on the other side of it. It had disappeared from the sight of Lucian without even an hint at the illusion it casted. Maybe, Lucian guessed, it had disappeared for they had arrived.
With that logic made Lucian walked towards the light.
