Before Vic could say anything more, you grabbed her by the arm and gently pulled her aside. She quickly yanked her arm away and pointed at the kids.
“What are you doing? We have to take that knife away from them.” she urged you in a hushed tone.
You shook your head. “No, we don’t.”
Your sister gave you an utterly confused look. “Why the hell not!?” she asked.
“Because we need them to finish. The wards, the dogwood, the garlic cloves, we need all of it.” you proclaimed.
“...Is there something you’re not telling me?” she said.
“I’m getting there. Just…let me get my thoughts together.” you pleaded. After taking a deep breath, you were ready to rush through this whole explanation. “So those cultists I told you about, they’re not normal people.”
Victoria nodded. “I thought that was made obvious by the assassin that they sent after the girl.”
“You don’t understand, Vic. It’s a vampire cult, with ACTUAL vampires!” you whispered at a volume that you hoped Peter couldn’t hear.
And of course, your sister’s first instinct was to laugh at you. She laughed for so long that you were certain that all of the rage and indignation from before had all but drained out of her. But after taking one good look at how serious your expression was, her face took on a similar quality.
“...Wait. You’re serious right now?” she asked.
You nodded slowly. “I wanted to tell you before, but-” you began to say. But you were quickly interrupted by your sister slapping you hard on the shoulder.
“Ow! What the hell, Vic?”
“Why would you wait so long to tell me that!? Why did I have to literally drag the information out of you!?” she hissed, keeping her voice at a reasonable volume. “We could’ve died, and you were just sitting there on my busted couch making me play 20 questions!”
“I thought that telling you would put you in even more danger.” you admitted.
Victoria rolled her eyes at you. “Oh, don’t give me that bullshit. You were just trying to take control of a situation that’s clearly gotten away from you.” she said, gesturing at the run down apartment.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” you asked, unable to keep the frustration out of your voice.
“You seem to be under the misconception that you can somehow control everything and everyone in your life. I mean, were you just planning on keeping us in the dark until you ‘handled’ everything by yourself?” she said, taking a step towards you. You stepped back without even thinking.
