>>5870552The next day, you wake up and find a black envelope in your mailbox. The paper quality is too fine to be some common bill. Within is a letter in fine Finnish writing, clearly inked with a quill rather than a modern pen. Still grasping the vocabulary, interpreting the vernacular of the author requires a dictionary, but in time, you read the letter.
Hello, Fiona Jarnafeldt
It has come to my attention that you have in your own missions recovered a prototype machine which it was my duty and responsibility to oversee that had become misplaced. In this letter, I would offer my thanks.
I would not have placed any ill judgment upon you if you had taken rash actions in response. But with your careful hand and cautious mind, you took as good a course of action as any could have given your circumstances. It is great fortune that the machine had been found so quickly and with such little friction. A search and retrieval mission in unsecured territory was nearly authorized, but your operator Sumika reached out to tell our people what you had found. You have saved our resources and perhaps even a few lives.
The machine itself is the Red Dogs Automated Combat Drone "Dhampyr." After the losses to Lorppo some months ago, I decided that if there was a way to minimize the loss of human life and the efficacy of protecting the city of Helsinki - and others across the globe - from evils, then I have an obligation to do so.
It is by design that the machine can feed off most nutrient rich biological matter - such as fish and nutrient drinks - but events immediately preceding to its disappearance had placed a greater precedent on the need to defend itself, and it quickly convinced itself that sustenance could be achieved through its primary mission.
With the machine returned, I will have you know that it will undergo numerous changes, including an issue with its battery discharging at an unusual rate when powered off, and its behavioral attitude. I hope this answers any questions and alleviates any concerns you might have had on the subject.
In addition to my thanks, I have a proposal for you. As a patron of the sciences, there are other projects that I oversee. Much of these involve projects relevant to your line of work. After the ACDD incident, I am certain you would agree a more closely observed and human approach is necessary in our research and I would like you to join me in this regard. Know that you will not be a "lab rat" - I will be using this equipment alongside you. You may decline this offer if you are so inclined, but I will have you know I have this offer to your coworkers. Show my secretary this letter and we can arrange a discussion. With higher responsibilities come higher positions, I will remind you.
Lastly, I would like to thank you for putting your life on the line for the people of Helsinki. It would be our privilege to keep you here.
