You stood on a Island of bone and ash, Ghoulish creatures picked at the bones like carrion, they tore at themselves as much as any bones with rapturous vigour, they kicked up great clouds of ash as they scrambled and fought that the icy sky was obscured with dark clouds, you could hear the clash of steel and fighting from elsewhere but could only spy six towering black monoliths in the distance, the seven you knew but they were missing one.
Corly’s was before you, a bloody sword in his hand, his eyes had been torn out and only hideous bloody pits gazed upon you, you felt detached expectancy at the sight, like this was some long wrought consequence played out.
‘’Where are we?’’ you asked, raising your own blade.
‘’The place we have always been’’ the revenant replied ‘’the place we will always be’’ it whispered as you, came together in a clash of steel that made no sound.
You felt tears on your face as you slew him, blood stained you, the ground beneath you bloomed into bloody poppy’s, above you the great black monoliths scorned you with silence as you held him in your arms, he was your brother, your sister, your Father, brown ben, mousy Sara and little Edmund all at once it seemed.
‘’Accursed’’ came the call across the waves and you felt terror around your throat.
‘’I had no choice’’ you echoed hollowly.
‘’Accursed’’ came the call behind you, you whirled only to see a cloaked figure, you thought his face obscured at first but instead you found it echoed your own features, silver hair, purple eyes, skin like hammered bronze but older.
''There was no other way'' you protested.
''And so you are cursed'' it said though its voice carried no judgement as it approached, its features seemed to shift with each step once male than female, pale skinned then dark as ebony, Fiery faced then pale as ice. It extended it’s hand sunlight pooled in his open palm ‘’Shall we only be accursed?’’ it asked. You did not know how to answer, It extended its other hand, spilling the moonless night bespeckled by stars.
You were about to answer as you awoke in the grey pale light of morning though you realised you could not remember it, you felt foolish disquiet in your bones, it was just a dream you told yourself only fools and children put stock in them, though its shade followed you as rose and dressed, ‘’Foolish’’ you muttered to yourself, It had been nonsense of dreaming ‘’Nothing more’’ you said to the grey dawn, still the shade of doubt refused to leave you and you decided that company, any company was better than silence.
