“You have any idea of what happened to Mama Bodil? Did she find ourrr note?” You channel Mirjam and ask as innocently as possible.
“She’s in jail. And I don’t know how, but she got promoted in there too.” Vera throws a bucket of cold water over your head. Well, you’re breaking two people out now…
“W-What? Why is she in there?” You can think of a few reasons, but Mama Bodil should’ve been in jail already in all the scenarios you can think of.
“For murder.” Vera has a concerned expression.
“What the hell? Mama Bodil wouldn’t hurt a fly who couldn’t fight back!” You refuse to believe it.
“Flies don’t fight back, you charming idiot! But, unfortunately, I get what you are trying to say, and I would agree if it wasn’t so stupid.” Vera sighs.
“Did you look into what happened?” You ask.
“No.” Vera dryly retorts. “I was unconscious during the fallout, and all court hearings were behind closed doors. I don’t even know where to begin, and she can’t receive any visitation.”
“Unconscious?” You find this detail odd.
“Our Alien friend asked me a BIG favor and left me exhausted for weeks. I’ve been feeling sickly and twitchy ever since.” Vera doesn’t sound proud of what she did. “He owes me big time.” Vera pulls out the Alien’s red button from underneath the glasses of her headband. The glasses… aren’t actually glasses! They’re for decoration!
“What favor…?” You don’t like where this is going.
“The people I mentioned in the car? I wiped part of their memories too.” Vera succinctly explains. You’re glad it didn’t lead to another flashback. “I hate doing it, but that’s what I’m good for…”
“I’m sorry.” You should’ve been there for her.
“Sorry for what, Johnny? None of this is your fault.” Vera doesn’t want you to beat yourself up for this. “We both had it rough.”
“Aye… But what have you been doing this whole time? Why didn’t you contact me?” You place your hand on top of Vera’s. You wanted to be there for her.
“Half of the time I was sick, the other half I’ve been doing my amazing investigations, and… tying some loose ends.” There’s a hint of wickedness in Vera’s words.
“What do you mean?” You don’t like where this is going. You think that a lot, and half the time you’re right about your hunches!
“Someone had to deal with the Magogues.” Vera cackles softly.
“Y-You killed them?!” You made love to a murderous rat?!
