“Anyone in The Family could have a reason to want to take Cassandra out.” Ana reasoned. “Perhaps they wanted her out of the way so that they could take over her business?”
“Or maybe they wanted to set her back a bit.” you added.
Gloria shook her head. “Neither of those plans would work. This attack was personal. And I only know one person with such a strong grudge against Cassandra, and the balls to pull something like this. Silas Thorne.”
The words came out like a snarl, as if saying his name was bad for her health somehow.
Flint’s eyebrows drew together in a frown. “Wouldn’t it have been better to make it look like an accident, instead?”
Everyone turned to stare at him. He flinched a bit under Gloria’s withering glare, but he kept talking.
“I mean, if he knows that he’d be suspect #1, wouldn’t it make more sense to do it in a way that doesn’t leave a trail?”
Gloria let out a derisive snort. “Silas isn’t exactly known for being subtle, as I’m sure some of you already know.”
She looked pointedly at Glass. A look of distaste passed over his slightly transparent features, but he met her gaze evenly.
“Besides,” Gloria continued. “This wouldn’t be the first time he’s made an attempt at her life. It was just that last time his thugs hadn’t made it 2 feet past the front door.”
“And this time he sent someone who knew what they were doing.” Koa glowered.
“Aren’t there rules against openly attacking other members of The Family?” Iara asked.
“Obviously.” Gloria shot back. “But since no one got a good look at the shooter before they got away, all we can do is speculate and throw accusations around. Even if the answer is right in front of our faces.”
“Do the doctors think that Cassandra’s gonna make it?”
That was Araña. She looked pale after having the news broken to her. Even Benga was looking forlorn at this point.
Gloria’s expression softened somewhat. “They don’t know. We’ve got our best doctors working on her right now, so all we can do is pray, and make the bastards who did this pay with their lives.”
“This is some shitty timing, though.” Koa said.
Prowler narrowed his eyes. “Is it, though?”
Everyone turned to look at him.
“The shooting happens right before we’re about to begin our operation. We’ve got one member of The Family in the hospital, another under intense scrutiny, and everyone else is either scrambling or shoring up their defenses.”
“You’re saying that someone planned this?” Ana guessed. “You think they knew of our plans beforehand?”
Hobie stroked his chin with a clawed hand. “Hmm. I can’t say for sure, but we can’t rule out the possibility. I think we should delay the operation.”
