I’m- I am familiar with the heir of the House and perhaps they might have a view of the island from the estate?”
The inquisitor shrugs, “Works with me, local nobles usually have the best resources and connections in their land. However, some can actively make it harder for an investigation to proceed if you aren’t careful with them. Since you’re, well, you that last part shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Wait you know the nobility here?” Marie asks before she clocks her forehead with her palm, “Oh, duh, of course, you do. Hey, what’s it like being a princess? Is it fun?”
“It’s,” Uh, how do you answer this? “Fine, I suppose?”
You’re forced to deal with Marie chattering on the entire walk to the Hyland Estate. Asher infuriatingly refused to hail a carriage stating that “walking is good for you” while knowing full well just how many Goddessdamned slopes and staircases this city has. Bastard. Though you should state it’s not exactly a difficult task for you. Not at all.
Unlike in the royal capital, people don’t tend to notice you here that much. You spy a few second glances from those who look like they belong to the upper classes but overall the citizenry just sees you as a noble, and not a royal. It’s probably because of how good you present yourself, the only logical conclusion seeing as your hair routine is second to none. Except maybe Cathy who lugs around those giant drills for whatever reason. Straight hair is much easier to fight with, and long hair is a privilege of the strong after all.
The inquisitor leads the two of you through many backstreets and alleys so you’re rather surprised when you turn a corner and find yourself very near the castle. You lost all sense of direction a while ago, only haven taking the main street in this city during diplomatic visits to the north. But now here you are, in front of the gates. Without your family, or any diplomatic pretense. Or could you count your mission as diplomatic in a sense? It’s certainly still official-
“Halt! Who goes there?! State your name and business with House Hyland!” Cries a rather young-looking guard standing out front of the gate with a spear.
“That’s a rather aggressive greeting,” The inquisitor states causing the lad to chuckle and scratch the back of his neck with his free hand.
“Sorry, I just always wanted to do that.”
“That’s a committed mob,” You hear Marie muttering nonsense.
“Is the house all here?” Asher asks.
“Yeah, they- Hey wait! I’m not supposed to say that until you say who you are! You tricked me!” The guard complains, “Uh, please don’t tell anyone?”
“Of course,” The inquisitor says, it’s only after a short pause do you realize he’s waiting for you.
