“Such worry has plagued all who faced the journey.” The Count informed Lucian, “I had an experience traveling the countryside in search of an Errant War. Every Knight who becomes a Knight of the Realm wonders if he should take up the oath. I remember the great many tenants I had broken as a Knight Errant though, none the less sleeping in the same hut for three days.”
“Ah, but the Umgi has me.” joked Adok as he pointed a thumb at himself, “If he's lied up in bed I’ll just carrying him to the next house or outside. It's nothin’.”
“Indeed the oath would be easier for yourself than others.” The count admitted as he gave a nod, “But that ignores the point that until the Ducal Prince agrees with your claims that you will not have the chance. Not with this deed.”
It was here that Adok gave a small laugh, “So whats the chances the lad chases us to the World’s Edge Mountains? From what I heard he won’t get another chance at this.”
“Yes he will.” The Count said firmly, “I understood that the two of you were planning on leaving as soon as you were able, does my memory make me a fool?”
“It does not.” Answered Lucian with a small bit of surprise as he was still caught up in the earlier words.
“Then I wanted to propose an alternative. While I have heard that you, Lucian, seem to be a naturally gifted rider when war breaks I do think that some more training could be used.” The Count told the two of them firmly, “My Castle would be the perfect place for you to stay within until after your recovery and training. The Prince will likely attempt to harass you when you leave it, but until then you will be untouchable.”
“Do you think I have a chance to fight him?” Lucian asked firmly.
To that the count thought to himself long and hard on that fact. A few sips from his drinking not revealing the answer that he was seeking. With a sigh he answered, “I do not think even a duel will placate him, doubly so when he will simply have one of his fellows fight on his behalf. The Duke made it clear, either one of you drags the other infront of him to demonstrate a feat of strength or you go together.”
“And what if I just left?” Lucian dared asking.
“With the honor you have gained by the routing of an entire army, you do not need to fear retribution or belittlement. If luck is on your side, as it seems to be, any Count worth his salt will welcome you into their castle for the nights needed.” The Count said, “Your tithe can be paid easily, nothing holds you to Bordeleaux anymore if you so wish it. Only the vengeance of a Prince shall be in your wake.”
