10 years ago, Yhwach and his Wandenreich waged a terrible war upon Soul Society that brought the three worlds to the brink of ruin. Though Ichigo and his allies were able to stop his mad ambitions it came at great cost. In order to stop reality from collapsing all together, Ichigo was sealed as the new Soul King.
However, the balance between the three worlds was permanently damaged causing them to slowly crumble away and fall into the Garganta, the void that separated all of them. Entire human cities and Rukongai districts found themselves suddenly floating in the abyss, at the mercy of the hollow that descended upon them in a feeding frenzy.
In the ensuing chaos what was left of the Gotei 13 was practically wiped out. The Central 46, desperate for new blood has begun to practically hand out Zanpakuto to any citizen remotely capable of wielding it. The leaderless Quincy fared little better, with the empire now exposed they quickly fell to political in-fighting as they struggled to fill the power vacuum left by Yhwach.
Humanity now aware of this other worldly threat has turned to its greatest medium to lead its defense, General Don Kanonji. Hollows continue to prey upon the vulnerable souls, causing many new Arrancar to be born. One such Arrancar has supposedly taken up the crown of Las Noches and taken to calling himself "The Aizen" in an attempt to rally a new generation of Espada around him.
