“Hey. I thought you’d never show up.” You gave your brother a friendly smile, hefting a bag of sweets in one hand and a six-pack of beer in the other. Your little detour with Callisto took a bit longer than you expected, and now that the days were getting shorter, the sun had gone down long before you got here. “You gonna let me in, or am I just gonna stand out here freezing all night?” Richard made a thoughtful sound as he leaned against the door frame. You raised the six-pack and titled it back and forth in a tantalizing gesture. “I brought gifts. Also, this isn’t really your house.” you pointed out. “Vic said that I can watch the place if and when she decides to go to space.” he said, moving aside to allow you in. “And speaking of, when exactly were you planning on looping me into that little discussion?” “Well for one, it happened yesterday, and I was dog tired from swinging back and forth during that very recent hostile takeover. You're welcome by the way.” you mentioned as you stepped inside and removed your coat. You didn’t really need it anymore with all those Horton Cells pumping through your veins, but keeping up appearances was important. “Also, it’s her decision, not mine. And Reed Richards was the one to suggest it, not me.” Richard shook his head as he shut the door behind you. “This is all happening so fast. First I find out that my sister’s an alien, and now I hear that she’s going back to space to recruit a team of aliens to prevent her crazy alien father from taking over the planet.” Richard was speaking in a hushed tone, mostly to prevent Peter from overhearing. “Yeah, I’ll admit, that one caught me off guard. I’m just hoping that the other major teams can get their shit together before he gets here.” you said, putting your presents down on the table. Rich let out a small sigh. “Yeah, me too. I don’t want you anywhere near that when it starts going down. The same goes for Vic. This family isn’t equipped to handle anything on that scale.” You gave him a lopsided grin. “I appreciate the concern, Rich, but I don’t think we’re getting off that easily. As soon as this ‘Grandmaster’ figures out who Vic is and where she’s been staying, she’ll become a target. One way or another, we’re gonna be at the center of that whole mess.” Richard frowned and nodded to himself. “Yeah, I know. It’s just…a lot, you know? First it was Mary disappearing, then it was Dad getting sick, and now Vic…” He fell silent, his face clouding with uncertainty. You walked over and lightly patted him on the shoulder. “Rich, I’m gonna make sure that Vic is okay, no matter what she decides to do. And I’m sure that your girlfriend’s fine. She sent you that secret message, didn’t she?” (Cont.)

There wasn’t much to say, really. “Yeah. Although she might get mad when she realizes that I didn’t swallow her letters like she told me to.” You both chuckled. “I probably wouldn’t have done it either. I haven’t had my new powers long enough to know whether I’m fireproof on the inside too, but I’m not sure if I want to find out that way. Oh yeah, did I mention that I have fire powers now?” You punctuated the question by wreathing your hand in fire, and Richard nearly jumped out of his skin as frantically looked around to make sure that Pete wasn’t anywhere nearby. “Not in the house!” your brother hissed. He was just about to grab a wet dish rag to smother the fire, but you shook your hand out before he could get very far with that plan. “Chill out. I’m not dumb enough to set Vic’s house on fire.” Your brother didn’t look very reassured. “How did you even do that? Is this another symptom of the spider bite?” You shook your head and grinned at him. “Nope. Horton Cells, baby!” Richard’s eyes grew wide. “Wh–-but---how’d you…” He was stammering uncontrollably by this point, and you couldn’t help but laugh. “If you wanna know how I got them, I’ll need a few drinks in me first. But more importantly, where’s the little guy? I brought a cake from that bakery that Vic showed me a few months back.” “He’s upstairs studying. I’m still trying to figure out what to do about his education. He’s a smart kid, and I don’t want him to fall behind.” your brother said, his expression suddenly becoming a bit stern when his eyes landed on the cake box. “Also, you shouldn’t let him eat too much cake before dinner. He can have a slice, but that’s it.” You raised an eyebrow at him. “You cooked dinner?” “Vic did. We’re eating leftover lasagna tonight.” he admitted. What will you say?>”I’m sure we can do better than that. Let me help you in the kitchen.” (What will you cook for your family?) >”That cake is looking more and more tempting by the minute. You know you want some too. All we have to do is clean up before Vic gets home, and no one has to get in trouble.” >”You’ve been home-schooling Peter, right? I honestly can’t think of a better teacher for him to have.” >”Why don’t you try taking him on a field trip? Maybe we can pay your old friend Connors a visit one of these days?” >”If you need money to send Peter to a private school, all you need to do is ask. I got a lot out of that little business trip, but I never wanted my people to get hurt in the process.” Richard’s expression seemed genuinely sympathetic. He probably wasn’t expecting you to pour your heart out like this. He opened his mouth to respond, but by that time, Peter was already flying down the stairs for the dessert that you promised him. Both of you plastered somewhat forced grins on your faces when Peter entered the kitchen. Yours became a lot more genuine when Peter ran up to hug you, though. “Uncle Ben!” “Hey, champ. I told you the city would be fine. I bet that chrome-faced creep is gonna think twice before he comes back here again.” The look that Richard gave you told you that he thought was extremely unlikely. You didn’t think so either, but Peter didn’t need to know that. Your nephew was about to turn and reach for the cake, when his father stopped him. “Hey, Pete. Why don’t you go wash up while me and your uncle set the table.” He deflated a bit at that, but you placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder and smiled down on him. “It’s okay. I’ll save you a slice. Or two.” “One.” Richard said in a stern tone. “Can it be a big one?” Peter asked hopefully. “That depends on how thoroughly you can scrub those grubby little hands of yours.” you put in. “They’re not grubby.” Peter protested, holding out his hands for you to see. You raised an eyebrow at him. “You wanna stay here and argue, or would you rather eat cake?” Peter didn’t give it a second thought before he was racing down the halls towards the bathroom. “They’d better be squeaky clean!” Richard yelled after him. You both chuckled as Peter nearly slid into the door in an attempt to open it. And when you were sure that he was out of earshot, the atmosphere grew serious once more. “Ben, I know you’ve always been the more…enterprising one of our family,” Richard began, speaking in a hushed tone. “But you’ve gotta be more careful out there. I know that you’ve been helping people, but I also know that you’ve been taking some serious risks for the sake of personal gain. And sometimes, other people pay for those risks that you take.” You remained silent, waiting for your brother to get to the point. “I’m glad that you helped drive off Doom, but the thought of you swinging around, trading blows with people that powerful. It terrifies me, man. If something were to ever happen to you I’d…” He paused, taking a moment to collect himself and check down the hall for Peter. (Cont.)

Peter looked a bit confused by the complex implications of your statement, but he seemed to relax a bit when he noticed the tension draining out of the room. Your brother on the other hand didn’t appear to be entirely satisfied with this conclusion, but he was at least comfortable with letting the matter drop for now. You knew that you’d be having this conversation again later, but that was a problem for the Ben Parker of the future.
Because tonight, the Parkers were going to pig out.
—------
“For the record, we’re not making a habit out of this.” Richard said as he savored his slice of strawberry shortcake.
You gave him a flat look.
“Just shut up and eat.”
Peter chuckled through a mouthful of strawberries and whipped cream frosting.
“Remember, we need to make this thing disappear before Vic gets home, so I hope you’ve got room for seconds.”
Peter snapped a lazy salute and nodded. He then muttered a muffled declaration that you assumed to be an affirmation.
“You’re such a bad influence.”
Richard said, shoveling another forkful of cake into his mouth. You all shared a laugh after that, but all signs of good cheer died when your sister walked through the front door.
“Hey, sorry I’m late. You wouldn’t believe the…traffic…”
For a minute, none of you said anything. You’d been too startled to even consider hiding the evidence, and now it was far too late to make any sly maneuvers.
What will you say?
>Point to Richard. ”It was his idea. Pete and I tried to stop him, but he forced us into it.” >”Surprise! We bought this to celebrate that ‘trip’ you were planning. I hope you don’t mind that we decided to start without you.” >”...Want some?” >”Well…it’s getting pretty late, fellas. I think I’m gonna pack it in for tonight.” >Write-in. Pastebins:

Slowly, carefully, you pulled out another plate, cut out a nice big slice of cake, placed a fork on it, and slid it towards an empty seat. Your sister’s eyes tracked the plate perfectly, before returning her gaze to you, your brother and your nephew. The tense silence stretched for what felt like an eternity, until Vic made a move towards the table, her expression unreadable. You were about to utter an apology, when your sister sat down at the table and grabbed the fork. You and your brother exchanged satisfied grins, but Peter still had an uneasy look on his face. “Does this mean we’re not in trouble?” Vic's face darkened as she regarded your nephew, and then the rest of you. Thankfully, Richard jumped in to put the fire out before things got out of hand. “Pete, do you remember what your uncle said to me earlier?” Richard asked. “Uh…’shut up and eat’?” Richard tousled his hair and gave him a proud smile. “See? I knew you were a fast learner.” “Were you guys really about to eat this whole thing without me?” Vic asked, her expression caught somewhere between incredulous and offended. “No. Of course not…” Your tone wasn’t the least bit convincing. And your statement was undercut even further when your eyes traveled conspicuously to the left to stare at a particularly interesting stain on the wall. “Feel free to take another slice, if you want.” you offered. Your sister gave you a flat look. “You’re lucky that this is my favorite bakery.” Vic said, stabbing her slice with a fork. “Do you have any other favorite places?” Pete asked optimistically. Vic gave him an indulgent smile. “I do. Maybe we can run through my favorite spots before I have to leave for my ‘trip’.” She gave you and Rich a meaningful glance, and a mix of complex emotions ran through you. On one hand, you were happy that your sister was finally able to have an adventure of her own, and you were confident that Van and Blackjack could do a decent job of protecting her. On the other hand, this would be your first time spending so much time apart from her ever since your memories were altered to perfectly fit her in your life. And while these emotions were too tangled for you to properly process at this very moment, you could at least smother them with cake for tonight. —---------- The rest of the night flew by in a blur, with you and your siblings watching a silly animated movie with Peter while drinking and mercilessly picking it apart. At some point, Richard put your nephew to bed, and the three of you talked well into the night before passing out on the couch. When you woke the next morning, you were alone in the living room. Without waking you, the other two got up, turned off the tv, covered you with a blanket, and then retired to their own rooms. (Cont.)

While everyone was sleeping, you left early, shot your siblings a text, donned your suit and started swinging towards Silvermane’s territory. Along the way, you were able to get a much better look at the city, still in the process of healing from its most recent major attack. Your brother’s advice, while unsolicited, still managed to take root in the back of your mind. A familiar rush of emotions flashed through your mind along with the memory of the not-quite argument. You were angry for having been criticized after working your ass off to save the city. You were anxious about the various new developments in the lives of your loved ones. But more than anything, you were worried that Rich might’ve had a point when he was talking about making mistakes that couldn’t be undone. You knew all too well that there were some things you couldn’t take back. So far, Flint, Louise and Iara were the only victims whose conditions you felt personally responsible for. All of whom had their lives changed as a result of them doing favors for you. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. All because you asked them to. Each time, the Huntsman made a clean getaway, and each time, he got a new super-powered pal, at the expense of their own happiness. You knew that you could never repay these people for what they lost—for the sacrifices they made, and you were painfully aware of the kindness, patience and understanding that you’ve been taking for granted. So far as you knew, none of them were seeking to enact vengeance upon you, and you were on good to decent terms with all of them right now. It should feel good to swing through life with little to no consequences, but you were beginning to realize that that way of thinking was dangerous for someone like you. Consequences were the universe’s way of teaching people valuable lessons. Because, like it or not, most sentients learned things the hard way. And if no one ever called you out, criticized your actions, questioned your behavior or punished you for perceived wrongdoings… Well…you’d be doomed to repeat the same mistakes, over and over again. You wouldn’t learn a damn thing, and the people around you would suffer. So, as much as it chaffed you admit, even internally, your brother might have had a decent point. You had a lot to think about on the way to Silvermane’s new base of operations. —------- Half an hour later, you arrived at a sleek office building with reflective, one-way glass panels lining its walls. Standing out front were several well-dressed men who immediately stopped what they were doing to scrutinize you as you swung down to meet them. You didn’t miss how some of their hands moved a bit closer to reaching for something on the inside of their suit jackets “Hey, guys, what’s with the cold reception? I wasn’t expecting anyone to roll out the red carpet, but this is ridiculous. And here I was thinking that I’d try the front door for once.” (Cont.)

“Which one are you?” asked the stocky man in front.
You raised an eyebrow.
“Who else? It’s me. The Huntsman. I saved your boss. Twice now.”
They relaxed slightly at that declaration, but they still looked wary.
“Is it the suit? I know it's a fresh look, but I’m still the same old web-slinger underneath it all.”
“That’s one reason.” another man said. “We’re mostly worried about the other guy showing up. You know, the one who looks, sounds and acts a lot like you.”
You didn’t think that his tone was accusatory, but it wasn’t a statement that you could entirely ignore, either. You got the impression that the others were curious to hear your answer as well.

Some were a bit confused by the costume change, but others were downright excited to see you again. Meeting up with Fat Tony on the way up put you in a much better mood, and you promised to treat him to lunch one of these days. Eventually, you and your guide reached a pair of oak, wooden doors that likely led to Silvermane’s office. You were proven right when the stocky man rapped his knuckles against the door. “Hey, boss. You’ve got a visitor. Immediately, you noticed how the office seemed bigger than the outside would’ve implied, which probably meant that this building had seen some recent remodeling. The ceiling was high, and the walls were made of smooth marble and reddish wood. That was all you could register, though, because your attention was firmly fixed on the two men standing in the middle of the room. Most notably, the man wearing a silver replica of Iron Man’s armor. One of his earlier models, you thought. “Hey, Huntsman! Glad you could make it.” he said, examining you through his mask. “It looks like I’m not the only one who got a new suit.” You shook your head in disbelief, your legs carrying you into the room before you even knew it. “Yeah, but…yours is way shinier.” you said. The younger man standing beside Silvermane smiled and extended a hand towards you. He was a tall man—taller than his father, but with the same broad shoulders. He had dark hair styled in a comb over, and he wore a dark blue suit with a rather colorful tie. You assumed this to be his son, and you were proven right a moment later when you gripped his hand. “I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Joseph. Joseph Manfredi. I hear that you’re the one to thank for saving my father’s life. Twice.” “Well yeah, but who’s counting? Are you the one to thank for Silvio’s latest fashion statement?” Joseph let out a small chuckle. “Oh, I assure you, it’s a lot more than a fashion statement. But enough about that for now. I’d like you to meet the team. They should be around here somewhere.” You frowned in confusion. “Team?” Silvermane laughed, his voice sounding an octave lower as it was processed through the mask's voice synthesizer. With a mental command, the mask slid up, and you got a good look at his smiling, wrinkled face. “Joseph hired a metahuman strike team. Says they’re real professionals. He thinks they’ll be an asset going forward.” he said, giving his son a proud smile. Oh. You thought you were supposed to be the one assembling the team, but you guess you can’t blame Silvio for finding help elsewhere. You’ve been putting this off for some time now. “But now that you’re here,” Silvio continued. “Can I take that to mean that you’re back for good?” He gave him a firm nod. “Of course. I had to deal with some personal business before, but I’m here now, and I’m ready to devote myself to the cause.” you declared. Joseph raised an eyebrow, and he looked like he wanted to say something, but his father beat him to the punch when he stepped forward to clap you on the shoulder. It was only slightly painful as he lightly exercised the strength of his new suit’s super-grip. (Cont.)

But we can use it as an excuse to mention we’re a dad now too and would want some of that planning to flow downhill to the benefit of kids. Even the ones that don’t have parents.

Less insulting than suggesting he didn’t already think of it (though he’ll probably take it in good humor) and lets him know we’re not just paying lip service to it. Then he may eventually ask us if we had any specifics in mind since we’ve got some investment in it.

And before anyone could respond, you leaned to the side, snagged a cigar from Silvermane’s desk and lit it with a tiny green flame from your fingertip. Both men recoiled slightly, but those expressions were quickly replaced by looks of astonishment. “You never told me he could do that.” Joseph said, his eyes locked on the flickering flame. “Neither did he, Joe.” Silvio replied, looking excited by the prospect of your new upgrade. Slowly, he accepted the cigar that you’d offered him and raised it up to his mouth. “Either you’ve been holding out on me, or you’ve got some new tricks up your sleeve.” “I’ve got a few.” you said, not mentioning your new web-shaping ability. You weren’t as practiced in that department, anyway. “But…just out of curiosity, Silvermane, what are your plans for this city once this is all over?” Joseph remained quiet, seemingly curious to hear what his father had to say as well. Silvio took a long draw from his cigar and blew out a puff of smoke away from you. “You’re worrying about the wrong things, Huntsman. What’s important is what this city can do for me, and how much resistance we’ll have to stomp out before we take it for ourselves. I want it all. And nothing, not even the Kingpin, the Rose or Nefaria is gonna stop me from getting it. The methods we'll use to accomplish that goal will vary, but it'll accomplish the same result.” His son looked pleased with this answer, and you had more or less expected him to say something like this anyway. “You’ve got some big ambitions, Silvermane. And you’re probably gonna need a lot of support to pull off something like that. Lucky for you, I’ve got a powerful friend that I’d like to introduce you to.” You dialed Gloria’s number on your work phone and handed it over to Silvermane, who looked a bit curious as to who you were contacting. After a brief exchange where your name was mentioned, Silvio must’ve decided that this conversation was going to take a while, because he requested that his men help you and Joe make yourselves comfortable. Despite his advanced age, the flames of ambition were alight in his eyes, and they burned more furiously than in most men you’ve encountered in your life. And that just left you and Joe, here. Seeing as how Silvermane was going to be busy with introductions and negotiations, you decided that now was as good a time as any to meet your new teammates. Joseph seemed to be waiting for you to ask, because when you did, he directed you through the most efficient route that would lead you to the office building’s basement level. When the elevator dropped you off, you were greeted by the sight of a cellar that didn’t look like it had seen much use, aside from storage. “I don’t suppose you recruited a live-in maid for our little hit-squad?” you asked. Joseph smirked, but he didn’t reply right away. Instead, he led you to a seemingly normal brick wall, and pressed his hand against a brick that was hidden behind a pile of boxes. Almost immediately, a column of bricks slid out of place, and a part of the wall slid open to reveal a hidden entrance. Just past the secret door, the floor transitioned from hard concrete to velvety smooth carpeting. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this business, it's that hired help has loose lips. And going forward, we can’t trust anyone that isn’t a member of the family. That’s why pops came up with this condition.” Joseph said, gesturing for you to follow. You both made your way through the dimly lit hallway at a leisurely pace. A cluster of voices echoed down the hall, growing louder as you approached the room they were in. The hallway ended in a plush lounge, with a fully stocked bar, a pool table, and an entertainment center that consisted of arcade games and several flat screen tv’s. There were five people in the room aside from you. The only woman was sitting at a bar, looking bored as she swirled her drink around in her glass. The masked man that was animatedly chatting her up seemed completely unbothered by the giant, mechanical scorpion tail that was hovering uncomfortably close to him. Another one of the guys was abusing a pinball machine in the corner of the room, shifting his body back and forth at incredible speeds as the machine rumbled. And in the middle of the room, two costumed seemed to be using their powers to play an impressive game of pool. “All right, everyone. Listen up!” Joseph shouted, clapping his hands together to get their attention. “Our little team’s getting a new member today. When I’m not around, I want you to listen to what he says. If he gives you an order, you do it. Around these parts, we call him the ‘Huntsman’. You might’ve heard of him.” “Of course.” said the woman with the scorpion tail. It swished back and forth behind her, its stinger scraping slightly against the floorboards. She looked far more interested in you than the guy who had been chatting her up at the bar. “This is Scorpia.” Joseph began. “She’s strong, fast, and that tail of hers can punch through solid steel like it was a sheet of construction paper.” (Cont.)

As if to punctuate his statement, the woman known as Scorpia lifted her mechanical scorpion tail until it was at eye level. It looked wickedly sharp, and it moved with a fluidity that you didn’t expect from a prosthetic. The woman herself had short, black hair and wore a green bodysuit with black armor plates placed around areas that didn’t seem to offer much protection. She had her hands on her hips and a cocky grin on her face as she regarded you. “Is it true what they say about you beating up Typhoid Mary?” “Of course.” you confidently replied. “She put up a good fight, but I’d say that her odds of winning a rematch are even slimmer than before.” A dark chuckle resonated throughout the room. The others seemed to take some satisfaction in hearing that Mary got her ass handed to her. Joseph gestured towards the man who’d been pummeling the pinball machine earlier. He wore red-tinted goggles, and a red and blue bodysuit with golden lightning streaks running along the arms, collar and waist. “This is Speed Demon. His name is pretty self-explanatory. He’s fast as hell, and downright deadly in a scrap.” he explained. “Guilty as charged.” the man said, his arm suddenly slung over your shoulder. He’d crossed the distance between you before you could even blink, and you barely had any time to react. “Slow down before you scuff up the floorboards.” Joseph chided him, but you could tell that he wasn’t actually upset. Speed Demon held up his hands in surrender and slowly backed away to rejoin the others. “The sweaty guy in the too-tight shirt over there is Hydro-Man.” Joseph continued, prompting a laugh from the others. And despite the fact that he was getting roasted, Hydro-Man didn’t look bothered in the least. In fact, he was laughing along with them. Similar to what Joseph had described, he wore a tight black t-shirt and a plain pair of jeans. Aside from his plain attire, you couldn’t help but notice how jacked the man was. He was almost as big as Flint, and that was saying something! Hydro-Man raised a hand, and it suddenly became transparent and amorphous. Clear liquid dripped onto the floor at his feet, only to be reabsorbed into his shoe a moment later. “I turn into water. It doesn’t sound that impressive, but I’m pretty sure I’m the only one here that can eat a bullet and spit it back out.” he said, sounding pretty pleased with himself. “The guy next to me is ‘Cyclone’. He controls the wind.” The man known as Cyclone smacked Hydro-Man’s shoulder. “I do not ‘control the wind’ you twit. My suit allows me to produce high-speed currents powerful enough to topple buildings.” he said with a distinct French accent. (Cont.)

He had a red visor that hid his eyes, but his mask allowed for his flowing blonde hair to flutter in the wind.
“Same difference.” Speed Demon said with a shrug.
“If I were you, I would just tell people that you control the wind.” Scorpia advised. “Makes you sound more impressive.”
Cyclone considered that in silence for a moment. After a while, he shook his head.
"No. This suit was given to me as a gift from the maggia. I will not take advantage of their generosity in order to stroke my own ego." he proudly declared.
The other didn't quite roll their eyes, but it was clear that their allegiance to the maggia wasn't nearly as defined as Cyclone's.
“And last but not least, we have Boomer over here.” Joseph said, turning to face the man whose suit was covered in what you now identified as white boomerangs.
“Boomer-ang. Not Boomer.” he clarified. “Actually, don’t include that pause in the middle. It’s Boomerang. I mean, you can still call me Boomer, but only in an informal setting. Gotta maintain that street-cred, know what I mean?”
He shot finger guns at you and made a clicking sound with his tongue.
“Hey, Huntsman. I’ll give you a buck if you can guess what this guy does.” Speed Demon said.
The others broke out into laughter, while Boomer gave them disapproving looks.

>72 Sometime after you managed to get the other two to stop bickering and bantering, you formed a huddle of your own and ran them through the basic strategy you’d come up with. Neither had any complaints, aside from Boomer expressing skepticism when it came to Cyclone manipulating the winds around his projectiles, but since no one knew what would happen for sure, they decided to go along with it. When everyone was ready for the brawl to begin, you raised a finger to the air and caused a small explosion that almost sounded like a starting pistol. The battle began in a blur, with Speed Demon racing to engage one of you in melee range. That much was expected, so Boomer and Cyclone were both doing their part. Boomerang stood on your left, flinging out curved projectiles as fast as his arms would allow him, displaying a surprising amount of manual dexterity, even as Speed Demon’s blurring form easily avoided them on the first pass. There was always the chance of him being hit on the returning path of each boomerang, but you didn’t want to wait for him to get much closer before that happened. To your right, Cyclone had both arms extended, a miniature tornado twisting and slithering through the air like a snake made of highly compressed air. And while he was corralling Speed Demon and Boomer was distracting him, you carefully aimed a webline at his feet. And through some miracle, or a superb display of skill, you actually managed to catch him off guard. When your webline began coiling around his legs, Speed Demon slowed down enough to where he was no longer a vague, colorful blur. He muttered a curse under his breath and struggled to break free. And he might've managed it to, if it weren’t for Cyclone creating a tornado under his feet, causing him to spin uncontrollably. As you continued spinning your webs, Speed Demon spun around so fast that he was almost completely enveloped in only a couple of seconds. Meanwhile, Boomer was focusing his fire on Scorpia, who hadn’t moved very far from the starting point. Hydro-Man was using his body to tank most of Boomer’s projectiles, while the rest were being shot down by what appeared to be green lasers fired from Scorpia’s gauntlets. While the two of them were busy in their ranged battle, you decided to engage Hydro-Man by projecting a jet of emerald flame in his direction. He tried to block at first, but he quickly realized that was getting him nowhere, so he tried to avoid the attack by collapsing his form and flowing along the ground. As soon as that happened, you and Cyclone pretended to focus your efforts on Scorpia. Her eyes grew wide with alarm, and while she was distracted, one of Boomer’s boomerangs made through her defenses, smacking her on the side of the head. She reeled back, and a thin film of green energy seemed to flash around her silhouette, but she was relatively unharmed. (Cont.)

Seeing this, Hydro-Man decided to go on the offensive. He rose up to meet you, closing the distance in an instant, shooting water and swinging wild haymakers as you and Cyclone leapt out of the way. You shot another bar of green flame, only for his amorphous body to part where the attack would’ve hit, nearly roasting Cyclone in the process. He looked a bit pissed, but he kept his complaints to himself and channeled his rage into a powerful burst of wind that scattered a good chunk of Hydro-Man’s now transparent body. You kept the pressure on, not wanting to give your opponent time to reform or stage a counterattack. Between the two of you, he didn’t stand much of a chance. Especially when he didn’t have access to a nearby body of water. Scorpia, on the other hand, seemed to have gotten tired of trading blows with Boomer. She sprang across the room, launching herself across the room with her pincers extended and her stinger poised to strike. Boomer’s cocky grin slipped from his face in an instant, and he stepped back to avoid being snapped in half or skewered when she got too close to him. But instead of running, he shot into the air, sent flying by some sort of propulsion system built into his boots. Scorpia stared up in disbelief as he flew away from her, but her surprise only lasted a second or two before she was back to using her gauntlets’ blasters to shoot him out of the sky. With a distinct lack of grace, Boomer wove between the lasers, swearing and shouting out insults with equal measure. All the while, Boomer tossed out Boomerangs at both Scorpia and Hydro-Man. Some were explosive, and others shot out arcs of electricity, but each and every one of them always hit their mark, and they always came in the nick of time, working to keep the dripping giant off-balance as you and Cyclone assaulted him with the elements of fire and air. Realizing that her strategy clearly wasn’t working anymore, Scorpia decided to mix things up by giving up on Boomer and pursuing you and Cyclone instead. She fired a volley of plasma bolts, forcing Cyclone to back off, and giving Hydro-Man some room to breathe. Then, she was on you, pincers and tail flashing towards you with malicious intent. Despite her clumsy opening, there was no denying the speed as which Scorpia struck. She was fast, and you had to be careful not to end up on the business end of that stinger. (Cont.)

“Aw, first boyfriend playing hard to get? I’d suggest dinner and a movie to start. We can make it a double date so you feel less like hitting him. I’d rather fall on my own stinger than go anywhere with him.” Scorpa said, her eyes narrowing to show her displeasure. “I’d rather none of us got stabbed with that thing, but you can’t win ‘em all.” you quipped, narrowly avoiding a swipe from her pincer and flipping over a sweeping strike from her tail. “I like what you’ve done with your suit. Hard-hitting, fast response, shields, blasters, more strike angles. And don’t get me wrong, you’re fast, but my teacher’s faster. I fought an octo-girl, but not in the way that you’re thinking. Get your mind out of the gutter.” “Well, I wasn’t thinking about it before, but now I am.” Scorpia shook her head, throwing another wild claw swipe that went entirely wide on its way to your face. Despite this being a training session, you were surprised by the viscous nature of her fighting style. She was still pretty raw, but her striking speed was nothing to sneeze at. If she had been better trained, then you might’ve actually been in trouble. “Can you use that thing to get those hard-to-reach places on your back? Because it looks like it’d hurt if you tried.” You paused, giving your opponent a sideways look. “...Have you tried?” “Have you even stopped to take a breath yet!?” Scorpia said, her frustration building with each passing moment. “Superhuman stamina. I don’t know how I ever lived without it.” you said. “Are you sure you’re good to keep going? You’re looking a little green.” Scorpia let out a low snarl and stabbed at you with her pincer, just like you’d been waiting for. Your arms blurred, strands of thick gossamer spinning around your hands to form a solid chunk of webbing in the rough shape of a shield, just in time for Scorpia’s tail to make contact. Her stinger punched straight through, ignoring the resistances that your webbing should have offered, and almost threatening to puncture straight through your arm. Luckily, pulling out was far harder than she would’ve expected, because her tail was left thrashing around in your impromptu web-trap, leaving her with only her razor sharp pincers and plasma blasters. Which, in hindsight, was a hell of a lot more useful than you’d originally thought. (Cont.)

And she shouldn’t have been able to move you, but that clearly wasn’t the case, because she managed to lift you, and the ground under your feet into the air as her tail thrashed about. At that very moment, you webbed her tail to the ground, leaving it stuck there just long enough for you to close the distance. “You didn’t say the magic word!” She swiped at you twice more. You ducked under them, slipping your right fist the gap in her defenses and clipping her chin. Scorpia staggered back, her force field flashing for a moment as she tried to regain her footing. Seemingly out of nowhere, a white boomerang flew over her shoulder and planted itself in the ground in front of her. She turned to find Boomer casually sauntering up to her, with Cyclone flanking from the opposite side. Hydro-Man was nowhere to be seen, but you did find a conspicuous puddle in the corner of the room. You snapped your fingers and pointed at the only woman left standing. “And…I think that’s game.” Scorpia groaned and threw her hands up in surrender. “Next time, I get to pick my teammates.” she groused. —---------- Now that Speed Demon had been cut loose and Hydro-Man had a chance to recover the mass that he lost, your new team was standing around, bitching to one another about the things they should’ve, could’ve and would’ve done differently during the training session. >>5875863 We should do a breakdown of the overall strategies and complement/criticize where appropriate since we’re apparently the team lead (with Joe/Silvio as manager/big boss). Which is a lot when you consider there’s 6 of us.
>Lay out our strat Burst down Speed Demon, then Hydro-man, then Scorpia. Speed Demon went flawlessly, Hydro-man was a miss since it took too long (kudos to his durability) but we pulled through regardless.
>Their strategy Dunno what they were going for, but the 2v1 we each had going on was good. They weren’t aggressive enough to start though, probably from working solo too much. Not freeing Speed Demon was fine at first since they could have taken Boomerang down for a 2v2 and freed him later for 3v2, but the clincher was when Boomerang backed off and Scorpia kept attacking him, then switched to us. She should have freed Speed Demon when Boomerang backed off to make it 3v3 again. As it stood, it was 1v1 and 2v1, which we were going to win. We’re fighting peer opponents here, a 2v1 is real hard for the 1 to outright win on.
>Boomerang, Cyclone Winning means less growth opportunity, so all I can say is work on that wind-boosted boomerang. Bommerang got them in a rhythm early, and quick shot would slide under an enemy’s defenses for a special payload. Good teamwork all around though, and that makes a real difference in peer fights like this.
>Ourself Battlefield awareness. We almost hit Cyclone with (un)friendly fire. Gotta work on avoiding that.
>Hydro-man He dodged well and holds up well when he is hit. When he’s limited like this he should probably be a speartip like us. Give Scorpia and the others openings, even if he has to be aggressive to do it. Just make sure someone is ready to take advantage of it.
>Scorpia Her close-range kit is terrifying and her shield lets her get in to use it, but her advance needs work and she needs good opponents who can stand up to her melee so she can learn how to really fight with it all. We can dodge well enough to work her speed, and her vs. Hydro-man and anyone else would let her work on getting past a blocker while he tries to zone an attacker. She’ll be the team sweeper soon enough. Oh, and she’ll learn to motormouth like us while she’s at it. It’s either that or she’ll actually listen to us while we fight and she’s seen how terrible that idea is.
In the meantime, she can either zone people putting pressure on the ranged fighters or follow behind Hydro-Man or us to truly flatten a melee opponent together.
>Speed Demon Yeah… he went down too quick to judge. Nothing he did wrong, we happen to have a good mobility killer and Cyclone made it into a finisher quick. Best advice I can give is to get a wrist-mounted blade for cutting through things that trap him. If he can add short-range flame or electricity to it, even better.

Seems like it’d be along the lines of critique everyone, emphasize teamwork, and order pizza for delivery while we do more drills with other matchups? The additional drills can probably be offscreened with the assumption we’ll continue critiquing as we go along.

The speedster was already in a foul mood, apparently not happy with the results of your skirmish. “That said, you guys still have plenty to work on. That being said, I think you should figure out what you’re going to do when you’ve only got a limited supply available.” HM nodded, looking a bit smaller than he did before the match began. Somehow, Boomer had managed to evaporate enough of him that he was unable to recollect himself before Cyclone scattered the rest of his collective mass to pieces. According to him, he was able to recollect moisture via condensation, but it was a time-consuming process, and shouldn’t be relied on in a pinch. “And now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s go down the list of notes I’ve made.” you declared, clapping your hands together loudly to grab everyone’s attention. “This goes without saying, but my team’s strategy to take down Speed Demon first went off without a hitch. Cyclone, that thing you did to spin up my webs was genius, and I wish I would’ve thought of it first. You and Boomer showed some excellent teamwork out there.” The Frenchman cracked a small grin, and you all tried your very best to ignore the scowl that Speed Demon shot his way. Just like how Cyclone was ignoring the fist that Boomer had extended towards him. The weather wizard seemed to have every intention of leaving his teammate hanging. “As for your team,” you said, directing your attention at Scorpia. No one complained at your appointment of her as their leader, so you kept going. “Your strategy wasn’t bad, but I don’t think you were aggressive enough. Having Hydro-Man hang back to tank a few hits would’ve worked out in your favor if you still had Speed Demon on the board, but with the way things turned out, you would’ve been better off sending him in to keep us busy while Scorpia freed SD, making it a fair fight again. Scorpia’s forcefield lets her tank a few hits, at least, and unless we sent some major firepower her way, she probably would’ve been able to cut through my webs before we could take out Hydro-Man.” (Cont.)

Scorpia nodded seriously, a thoughtful expression on her face. You were relieved to see that she was at least capable of taking criticism. And the tension in Speed Demon’s face seemed to ease slightly when he realized that he could foist some of the blame onto Scorpia for not freeing him earlier. “And Hydro-Man, you’ve got a real gift for taking hits, whether it's for yourself or your team. But–and I mean this in the most literal sense–you’ve gotta pull yourself together. In my eyes, you’re this team’s front-liner, and we can’t have you going down early.” Hydro-Man’s eyes went wide, and he pointed a questioning finger at his face as he tried to get a read on your express. “Yes, you. Your abilities allow you to get up close and personal without risk of serious injury, and I can see you being an important part of our strategies going forward.” you explained. That seemed to cheer him up a bit. You returned your attention to Scorpia. “And you. Your close-range capabilities are going to be downright terrifying when you find an opponent that can actually keep up with you. Your suit's a work of art, and you’ve got solid defense from your forcefield, and a devastating offense in the form of your pincers and stinger. But you can't rely on them too much. Once your combat capabilities catch up with your speed and strength, I think you'll be a force to be reckoned with.” Scorpia twirled a finger through her short, dark hair, a pleased smile on her face as she silently basked in the praise you were showering her with. She still had a lot to improve on, but there was a solid enough foundation there that you didn't see the point in emphasizing the flaws in her approach to strategy any further. “And last but not least, Speed Demon.” you began, turning to face the speedster. He tensed a bit, and the others went quiet as they waited to hear what you had to say about his performance. “You went down a little too quickly to accurately judge your performance. If I hadn't landed that webline, then it might’ve been a different story, but things just happened to turn out in our favor. The best advice that Incan give you is to maybe invest in a bladed weapon to cut yourself free from things that tangle your legs up.” You could practically see Speed Demon’s earlier frustration draining from his face, now replaced by the malicious glee that likely came from imagining himself equipped with a deadly weapon. Such a thing could only further augment his capabilities. You just hoped that he wouldn't get too carried away. “And that about covers it. Any questions before we wrap up here?” you asked. Boomerang raised his hand. “Yes, Boomer.” “Those things that come out of your wrists. You called them webs. Is that stuff actually inside of you?” You blinked and stared down at your arms for a second. “Uh…yes?” you answered. “How?” he asked. Hydro-Man was the one to ask this time, and he didn't bother raising his hand.
“Are you sure you ain't Spider-Man? Because you look and sound just like him.”
The others nodded their agreement and murmured amongst each other, seemingly sharing the opinion.
“Yes, I'm sure. That guy's just been copying my style ever since he debuted.” you answered.
It wasn't an outright lie, so the line came naturally when you repeated it.
“Does anyone have any questions that aren't about my relationship with Spider-Man?”
All at once, everyone either put their hands down or took a step back. Seeing as how no one was stepping forward, you decided to conclude this training session and move onto more pressing matters.
“Great. Now, who wants pizza?”
And just like that, their enthusiasm had been rekindled, and their frustrations and misgivings with one another were quickly forgotten.
“Oh, thank god. I thought my stomach was gonna eat itself.” Speed Demon said, patting his toned stomach.
To your relief, no one noted how Speed Demon had probably gotten the least amount of exercise out of everyone here. But, having super speed probably sped up his metabolism and worked up a similarly super appetite, so you let it go unsaid. That is, until Boomer blatantly pointed it out to him, and the group as a whole.
You actually wondered whether Joe would be able to pull these guys apart if tensions rose while you were away. If a fight broke out because someone said something stupid, then you might just be losing a super-powered maggioso or two. It was food for thought, but currently, you were more worried about getting food for your belly.

It wasn’t there when we went in with Van, and I don’t remember shoving one of the plant monsters in Central Park there.
In any case, we can make a crack about how we’re checking in on Audrey II and seeing their opinion on pizza. If anyone wants to come along to offer thems- take part in SCIENCE then they can join.
>Bond with your new team over a few slices. Before or after. Since the plant trip would cut into our time I’d focus on Boomerang and Scorpia since they were the biggest hotheads earlier.

Much to your great relief, some of the more rambunctious members of your party gave up on the idea of invading a local restaurant and claiming it as your own for the day. The likelihood of anyone doing anything about it was slim, considering the relatively low risk that you and your team would pose while stuffing your faces, but you still didn’t want to leave anything to chance. Once this Gang War began in earnest, the cops and supers would be too busy to single you out, making it easier to move around the city in the midst of all the chaos that was bound to break out. Instead, Joe drove you back to the Maggia base and had some pies picked up for you. And as your team strode through the place as if they owned it, you didn’t miss the suspicious glances that the other maggioso’s directed their way. You, on the other hand, were more or less a known entity around these parts, despite your prolonged absence over these past few months. And your promise to share the leftovers of your lunch didn’t hurt your reputation either. Except, you were becoming less and less confident in your ability to keep that promise, and the cause of that worry was entirely because of Speed Demon. He was shoveling enough pizza into his gullet to warrant a serious choking hazard, even from a speedster. You made sure to keep the water and soda nearby, just in case. That had drawn everyone’s attention at first, but the others quickly lost interest in favor of examining Hydro-Man while he ate. “Aren’t you made of water? How’re you able to digest that?” Scorpia asked. “Does everything in your stomach get turned to water too, or does it just float around inside you?” Boomer speculated. Hydro-Man just shrugged, swallowing the chewed up remains of his food. “I dunno how it works. I’ve never had any issues, though.” “Do you still have to…you know…” you said, trying to put it delicately. “Do you still poop?” Boomer asked, not at all concerned with the concept of subtlety or proper etiquette. Scorpia made a disgusted face, and Cyclone scoffed. “Can we please save any and all discussion about Hydro-Man’s bowel movements until after I’m done eating?” he requested, picking up his cutlery and slicing off another chunk of pizza. Boomer made a face at him, and you were sure that you had a similar expression under your mask. “Dude, seriously? Is that how they eat pizza over in France, or are you just that much of a priss?” Boomer taunted. Cyclone groaned and turned his knife until it was pointed directly at Boomer. “Boomerang, this food is greasy, and could easily stain my costume if I am not careful. The same goes for all of you. None of you have even washed your gloves since our little training session. At least Hydro-Man has an excuse in that he is literally made of water.” he argued. “Why don’t we ask the evil scientist who created him, or experimented on him, or whatever?” Speed Demon suggested, speaking up for the first time since the food arrived. And even then, his speech was barely intelligible with all that food in his mouth.
“Chew your food, you savage.” Cyclone chastised, wiping his costume down and scooting away from the man in his chair.
“Relax, Cyclone. You’re so uptight. You and Joe.” Scorpia mentioned. Their handler was conspicuously absent from the gathering, saying that he had previously made arrangements for his own meal.
What will you say?
>”Speed Demon raises a good point. How did all of you get your powers and your equipment?” >”Hey Scorpia, does that forcefield protect you from grease stains too? Because if so, then I might want to invest in one too.” >”I know a few tricks to get stains out of your suit. And I’m sure the Manfredi’s wouldn’t let us go out wearing anything but our Sunday best. Hell, Silvio once had a suit made for me.” >”Do you guys have any nicknames that you like to go by, or do I have to start making some up? I’d understand if you don’t feel comfortable giving your real names, or any other incriminating information, but two of the people here aren’t even wearing masks.” >”Do you think we’ll get access to the good stuff after we’re sworn in? May need some alterations so I can light up right.” Slight tweak to the suit mention so we don’t brag as hard about it. Cyclone mentioned he has a Maggia suit as well, and had a thing about not using their generosity to stroke his ego.
We can mention it was a gift from Silvio himself if we go into the story of how we got it. It’s not a boast if it’s just mentioned as a fact towards the end of a story.
>”So, what brings you all here? It started with the money for me, but now I’ve got enough even if I still want more to do more. I’m here now because I know Silvio really does return the respect he’s given. New York’s greatest natural resource is assholes, so it’s good to have a boss that’ll look after you.” Kinda interested in seeing why they accepted Joe’s offer, but I also think they won’t answer if we don’t give up our own reasoning first. I gave mine for the write-in.

I’d understand if you don’t feel comfortable giving out your real names, or any other incriminating information, but two of the people here aren’t even wearing masks.” Scorpia and Speed Demon exchanged a look. “I thought our codenames were sort of like nicknames already.” Scorpia said. Everyone else nodded at that. “Of course, some names are a bit more of a mouthful than others. Like ‘Hydro-Man’ and ‘Speed Demon’.” Boomer said, leaning back in his chair and making air quotes with his fingers. Both men glared at him, but Hydro-Man was the first to get over it. “The name’s Morris. Morris Bench. Whether ya wanna call me Morris or Hydro-Man is up to you, really.” You blinked at him, and a quick look around the room showed you that everyone else was equally surprised at his admittance. You supposed that he didn’t think much of maintaining a secret identity, but that was kind of obvious from the way that he dressed. “Nice to meet you, Morris. Can I call you Moe?” you asked. He cocked an eyebrow. “I guess we’re not there yet. I’ll try again later. How about the rest of you?” “Scorpia’s fine.” the green-clad woman said. “It’s short and sweet. And Boomer’s just, well…Boomer.” You both looked over at the man, but he didn’t look the least bit bothered by the statement. You guess he must've gotten this nickname, even before he was recruited by the Maggia. “And you may call me Pierre.” Cyclone added. “Although my codename is brief enough where I wouldn’t mind being referred to as such.” After that introduction, all eyes fell on Speed Demon. He’d finally taken a break from stuffing his face to contribute to the conversation. “What about you, speedy? I remember hearing somewhere that you used to go by the name ‘Whizzer’. Would you like that to be your new nickname?” Scorpia said, a teasing smile on her face. Speed Demon scowled at her. “Speed Demon’s fine, thanks. If you need to make up a nickname in your head, be my guest. But when we’re in the field, or hanging out with all the other made men, I’d like you to call me by my codename. I’m sort of trying to build a reputation here.” he explained. You nodded. “I can respect that. I’ll be sticking with my codename too, if anyone was curious.” From the looks on their faces, that came as no surprise to them. “But going back to the topic of grease stains,” you continued, turning your attention to Cyclone. “I know a few tricks to get stains out of your suit. And I’m sure the Manfredi’s wouldn’t let us go out wearing anything but our Sunday best.” You paused, frowned to yourself, and then leaned back in your plush, leather chair. (Cont.)

“Which reminds me, I should fireproof my other suits before I use them again. Especially the one that Silvermane gave me. I don’t think he accounted for my future ability to burst into flames when it was made, so I might have to make a few alterations.” Scorpia whistled. “Silvermane gave you a suit, and you haven’t joined up with him yet? What’d you do to earn that?” she asked, leaning forward in her chair. “Sort of saved his life two or three times. No biggie. Lucky for me the Maggia is big on paying back favors.” Boomer nearly fell out of his chair, and Speed Demon’s mouth was hanging open. A bit of unchewed food was still visible there. Cyclone might’ve criticized him for it, if he wasn’t so busy reassessing his opinion of you. He was still wearing his visor, but you could sense a clear shift in his body language. “Damn. No wonder he put you in charge.” Morris remarked, sitting up in his seat. Scorpia nodded, her eyes still locked on you. “How’d you do it?” she asked. Everyone else leaned in, clearly curious to hear more. So, you told them. You left out some key details, but you kept in the juiciest tidbits, like how you sent Daredevil and White Tiger to fight off the Vultures, while you brought down the Big Bird himself. You were very careful not to mention how you ended up letting Toomes escape, since you figured that the Big Man wouldn’t appreciate that very much. Then, you told them about the attempt on his life by Half-Step and Foxhole. And how you had to pull him out of the fire when Electro blew a hole in the roof and drew the cops’ attention. And as you did, you could see the awe in Pierre’s expression. It was clear to you now what he was feeling towards you, and you were pleased to find that it was nothing short of respect. You were getting the same vibe from Scorpia and Morris. As for the other two, you thought you were picking up a bit of envy from Boomer, and possibly a hint of resentment, but you weren’t entirely sure. Speed Demon was harder to get a read on. Maybe you’d get better at it once you got to know him better. “But that’s enough about me. I want to hear more about you guys.” you said, panning an extended finger across the room. “What brought you all here? I got into the game for the same reason that most people do. It was all about the money. I’m pretty flush with cash right now, though, so I’m thinking about investing. And if my history with Silvio has taught me anything, it’s that he returns the respect he’s given. New York’s greatest natural resource is assholes, so it's good to have a boss that’ll look after you.” Everyone nodded. That was something that anyone in your profession could agree on. “Yeah, I’m in it for the money. The same as everybody else.” Morris declared, sinking back into his chair. “But more than that…I just want some fucking respect around here. You know? I want people to look at me like they do Silvermane.” “Yeah. I know what you mean.” Scorpia agreed. “It’s kind of the same with me. I’m leaning a little closer to the money side of things, but a little respect couldn’t hurt.” She shrugged, and her and Morris shared a brief tender moment as they chuckled together. “Money and respect.” Boomer said, running his finger along the tip of one of his white boomerangs. “There’s no better motivator for doing our kind of work.” “Fuck the respect.” Speed Demon put in. Everyone turned to look at him. He didn’t look remorseful in the slightest. “Money’s all that matters. Who cares what strangers think? No one’s gonna look after me, except me. But…I wouldn’t mind accepting whatever Silvio’s got to offer.” He adopted a smug grin, which was almost the exact opposite of Pierre’s sneer. You almost stepped in between them, just in case Cyclone got any funny ideas. But instead, he remained seated and began to speak. “I am doing this to repay the great man who made me who I am today. The Maggia have given me much. They pulled me out of the dirt, clothed me, provided me with an education, and they ask for nothing in return, other than my undying loyalty. And I am finally in a position where I can repay them.” He got up from his seat and removed his visor, revealing a pair of clear, blue eyes. “I am here because the Maggia needs me to be. And if you have need of me, just say the word. We would be glad to have a stalwart ally in the Huntsman.” “‘We’. You’re already sworn in.” It was a statement, not a question. One that was apparently funny, because Pierre only smiled in response. Then, he turned to leave. Everyone watched as he walked towards the door. But right before he stepped through, he half-turned his head to regard you. “Oh and, thank you for the meal. It was decidedly average in my opinion, but I may be biased in that regard.” And just like that he was gone, sucking all the wind out of the room along with him. “...Does that mean I can have his share?” Speed Demon asked. You gave him a flat look, and lazily waved a hand at him. He was back to eating in the blink of an eye. Now it was Scorpia's turn to sneer at him. —--------- (Cont.)

As soon as everyone was full, you left them to laze around the underground lounge, while you went out to place another order for the other men that hadn’t gotten a chance to eat yet. Having them eat Speed Demon’s leftover pizza crusts seemed a little cruel, and these boys deserved better. And when you announced that you were footing the bill, well… Silvio’s men knew how to make a guy feel like a hero. —----- After an unhealthy amount of enthusiastic back pats and shoulder rubs, you peeled yourself away from the others and made your way back to Silvermane’s office. You knocked, announced your presence, and Joe appeared to allow you inside. In the corner of the room, Silvio stood there in his gleaming armor, staring out the window. And when he turned to face you, there was a huge grin on his face. “I hear you bought lunch for the boys. You should’ve told me. I’ll give you a list of the pizzerias that I own. You’ll never have to pay for another pie for the rest of your life.” All of a sudden, your legs wobbled, and your knees nearly buckled as your mind raced to process that statement. Free pizza? FOR LIFE? “What’s wrong?” Joe asked, a confused look on his face. “Oh, wow. No, I'm fine. I…I think I need to sit down for a second.” Silvio snapped his fingers at his son. “Joe, get the guy a chair.” The younger Manfredi moved to retrieve one, but you raised a hand to stop him. “Nah, I’ve got it.” Your hands and fingers blurred before you, weaving your webbing into a vaguely familiar shape and using the power you’d received from your Nega Bands to create a crude stool. You carefully set it down and sat on it, shifting your bottom a few times, just to make sure that it wouldn’t stick to your pants. “Don’t worry. It probably won’t stick to the carpet. And even if it does, it should dissolve in roughly an hour or so. I think. I’ve been trying out a new diet that my doctor recommended, and it's got my webs acting all wonky. Is there a number that I can call if my webs last longer than an hour?” Despite himself, Joe actually chuckled a bit at that. He and his dad both looked like they were in a good mood. “Look, we’ll find you a specialist later. For now, why don’t you hear what my old man has to say?” “Hey, I’m not too old to bend you over my knee, you little punk.” Silvermane shot back, snapping his mask back into place. “And believe me, these metal hands hurt like a bitch.” Both men burst into laughter, and you joined in a moment later. “I take it the meeting went well?” you asked. “Pop here was telling me that Ms. Munoz was planning on giving us a generous donation in the form of weapons, microchips, and some very valuable information.” Joe explained. >Pym Technologies What do they even do? Besides Pym particles I guess. Also stepping on a founding Avenger's toes seems like a recipe for disaster.
With all that in mind...

It might take a while to grow to the size of its competitors, but nothing is impossible in this world. >Suggest looking for property in Yonkers or White Plains. New York City gets hit with some kinda disaster every other week. Even with insurance, that could get expensive quick. Let's act like we're starting from nothing while having massive advantages like fucking AMERICANS GODDAMNIT!
But for real, my main concern right now is being able to pay back Gloria's investment in us. Sure, she's grateful to us, but that only goes so far.
To that end, starting from scratch feels like the way to go. That'll give us the freedom to operate as we please and make some money while doing it.
It would also be easier for us to slip onto the board of directors that way, giving us a somewhat plausible alibi for the all the money we get for seemingly doing fuck all.

>>5883010 On the note of NY getting hit by disasters, something in infrastructure would be a profitable niche. Plenty of demand, and opportunities to spread a surveillance network of hardware through the city. They don’t even need to make it an illegal network, build security centers into buildings and install the cameras/sensors etc. etc. and they’ll already have an in by knowing how the hardware works.
Also makes it cheaper to build later bases. They’ll already have plenty of materials on hand.

As far as surveillance hardware goes, the Atlas Foundation has pretty much got the market cornered. Their surveillance equipment is top of the line, and everyone buys from them.
Transportation is handled by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority(MTA). Roxxon handles utilities. Oscorp and Stark handles communications, along with a few other organizations that already exist within your reality. Similarly, the educational, housing and emergency infrastructure are mostly the same, but the government agencies and superhero teams help to bolster the efficiency of the latter.
Fortunately for you, the Maggia has got a firm grasp on the city's waste management infrastructure.

>Damage Control then. Stable revenue that no one can easily touch because of its legitimacy, oversight, and general importance to the community. Fisk and Stark may want to cut off funding, but they’d be hurting the city if they did. PR is another field of battle and one they’d be ceding to Silvermane.
The general breadth of knowledge and access that the company would have would be good for planning heists, let alone what some low-level corruption could accomplish in planting bugs, making alterations to designs, or skimming materials to slowly build up other bases off the record. Maggia control of sewer infrastructure makes it more potent since they can potentially create security weaknesses in buildings to exploit via the underground, offset by “efficiencies” with the water and sewage utilities. Government oversight is just a way to learn who to bribe in government if you have the cash for it too.
Unspoken is that if our twin does ever take up that psychologist job there’s a non-zero chance he could convince Silvermane to take it easier on the crime and focus more on legit enterprises. It’s also a good gift for his daughter if she tries to stay clean herself. Anonymous

Did you guys have a name in mind, or would you like to leave that to Silvermane and Joe? Were there any other design choices, company policies or staff choices that you were considering?
We don't have to tackle all of this now, if you don't want to, but it'll be brought up again later.

>>5883689 I'm down to leave the name to Silvio and Joe as I can't really think of anything at the moment.
>Were there any other design choices A subterranean section of the main complex for sensitive research and testing is a must. I'd also argue for a secure route into the sewer system if we end up buying property in New York.
>company policies I have some thoughts, but I think it's best to address that in it's own vote. Right now I'm still trying to figure out how many world ending scenarios we could potentially be responsible for and how to head them off at the pass.
>staff choices Prowler and Ember seem like obvious choices. I'd also say Cho, but I want to wait until we're able to pay him more than whatever he's making under Richards.
I also want to extend an invitation towards Warren, Connors, and Gwen. Obviously it'd be a bit of a longshot to have any of them leave SHIELD at this point, but I figure they deserve the chance to do research without being subject to spook oversight.
And lastly, I want to ask Richard if he knows anybody who'd be interested in working at our little startup. I don't want to offer him a job personally though, I don't want to have him associated with a criminal venture in case it all goes up in smoke.
Anonymous
>>5883689 >Medical Miracles >New Suit >Argent Advancements I can do plenty of names. No guarantee they’re any good.
We might be able to involve Toomes or Edison, and even Prowler could have a role there. There’s both tech and biology sides to cover, and we have more free “tech” contacts right now. A lot of our bio contacts I can think of already work for alphabet agencies.
I’d suggest a more discreet (but not necessarily illegal) wing dedicated to magical biotech (magibiotech? biomagitech?) since we have a large number of magical connections and it’s probably an underserved market. We can work as an intermediary for the Morlocks to sell goods if they want to keep their distance, while Gloria may have an interest in providing some experts of her own. She’s got demon problems, I’m sure she’d love to get stuff to make people more resistant to them.
Would Morbius be interested in providing any people with expertise? Better blood substitutes or injectables that let vampires work in the sun for a time sounds like something he’d be interested in for obvious reasons.
Anonymous
>>5883689 >>5883793 Know what, I can think of one company policy to get in front of.
>Mutants Knowing how business work, an unscrupulous sort (like Silvermane) might decide to use mutants for medical experiments. They have control over the sewers, going on a hunt for subjects is going to happen if we don’t can it early on.
So re: mutant policy, I’d ask Silvermane is anything related to them go through us first. He’ll wonder why, and we can say it’s because some local communities here have already given effort and blood for both your personal and professional projects. The meeting he had with Gloria came at the cost of one of them, all because you asked for their help on a job. And they didn’t hesitate in helping.
The Morlocks will likely never ask for a seat at the table, they’re too mistrustful of people. But they’ve proven to be Family all the same, and if they can’t or won’t speak up then we’ll do it on their behalf. They’ve given too much for you to let them be exploited by something you’re involved with.
With some variation on that speech done, we can open the offer to speak with them about assisting. Selling their bodies for science will go over terribly, but we can ensure if it does happen for some unknown reason we’ll work out safeguards with Callisto and Glass. Contracting them out for stress-testing advancements would be an easier sell, or simply having their labor available. If there’s work that can be done in the sewers they may be amenable to that much in Callisto’s group, and Glass’ group should be willing to do work in other workplaces.

“I think we should try and start up our own Biotech company.” you suggested. “If Gloria’s willing to give us what we need, then we’d be in much better shape than if we tried to do it on our own.” Joe raised an eyebrow at that. “Are you serious? That sounds like a major investment.” You nodded. “Sure, it’ll take a while to grow to the size of Fisk and Stark’s companies, but I think, with a little hard work, and a lot of leverage from our contacts, we can make it a successful business.” Silvermane hummed thoughtfully and folded his arms over his chest. “It’s not a bad idea. If we’re aiming to end up on top after this is all over, then it’d help to have a foundation set up where we can build upwards after taking out the competition. If Fisk has a tower, then why shouldn’t we have one too?” Joe gave his father the vaguely skeptical look of someone who liked what was being proposed, but couldn’t wrap his head around how it could be feasibly accomplished. “If that’s what you want to do, then I hope Ms. Munoz can fork over the cash to get this little startup off the ground.” Joe said, running a hand through his dark, gelled hair. “Do we even have a name for this company?” You raised your hands in surrender. “Hey, I can’t be the only one coming up with good ideas around here. Besides, this should be a decision that we all can agree on. Let’s put our brains together and collaborate.” Silvermane held a hand up to stop you and Joe before you could go any further. “Hold it. I still need to run this by our new partner to see how she feels about it.” “Sounds reasonable.” you said, nodding to both Manfredi’s while slowly backing away towards the door. “Be sure to let me know how that goes.” “You’re leaving?” Joe asked. “I’ve got a thing to take care of.” Silvermane turned his frowning silver mask in your direction, but you were quick to reassure him before he could ask the question that was undoubtedly lingering on the tip of his tongue. “Don’t worry. I’m not leaving the city this time. We’re in this together, Silvio. We’re gonna have a lot to talk about, soon.” Silvermane demanded. “You got it, boss.” And with that, you gave them a quick salute and turned around to head out in the hall. —---------- Some time later, you found a nice quiet corner to deploy your portal projector. With a simple press of a button, it created a rippling rift of swirling, crimson energy. This not being your first time, you stepped through it with the casual ease of someone pushing past a curtain of plastic beads. (Cont.)

Scorekeeper !!urZ1qzDpXky ID:hSn2Ul6s Mon 08 Jan 2024 16:46:27 No. 5885542 Report A second later, you arrived on the other side, a pocket dimension composed of violet fields and an amber sky with a simulated sun that seemed to always be on the verge of setting.
It was quite empty at the moment, which worked in your favor. You didn’t have to waste a whole lot of time tracking down the plant monster that you chucked in here. Aside from the alien spaceship that you’ve been storing within this simulated reality, it was probably its most easily recognizable resident.
At least, that’s what you thought. In reality, it took you a full 20 minutes to track the thing down. And that was only because you’d mistaken it for a small hill. It was only when you remembered that there hadn’t been one there before that you decided to take a closer look.
As you rounded the corner, two blue orbs stared up at you questioningly. It would appear that during your time away, the plant-thing had taken the liberty of merging with the foliage decorated this otherworldly landscape.
“There you are. We might need to put a bell on you.”
The plant-thing didn’t seem very apologetic, but then again, you weren’t sure how intelligent it really was.
“Sorry for the wait. I’ve been a bit busy lately.” you said, unsure of whether it could understand the concepts you were throwing out. “I guess I can’t put this off for much longer. We need to figure out what we’re going to do with you.”
The creature chirped curiously, its round blue eyes unblinking as it tilted its head to the side.
What will you do with it?
>Let him stay here. He’s safer here, and he can probably merge with this whole island if you gave him enough time. >Bring him to Central Park and introduce him to the Topside Morlocks. He, Donny and Nature Girl would probably get along swimmingly. >Show him to Callisto. Maybe he can help get rid of those thick vines that are giving her so much trouble. >Take it home with you. A couple ideas ran through your head at that moment, but the one you kept coming back to was Callisto. You didn’t know for sure, but there was a chance that this thing might prove to be useful to her. “Hey, little guy. How do you feel about taking a trip down to the sewers?” The thing chirped, and you nodded. “Great. I knew you’d like it.” you said, offering a hand to it. A purple and green tendril slithered towards the offered arm, before coiling up and around it. You gave it a gentle tug, and the creature detached itself from the growing heap of foliage to rest on your shoulder. It was covered in dirt and smelled a bit of sulfur, but you tried your best to ignore it. Either way, with your upcoming trip to the sewers, and the sweat you worked up earlier, you felt that it might not be such a bad idea to take this suit to cleaner’s sometime soon. “Well, at least I know Callisto won’t mind.” you said, pressing a button on your bracelet to reopen a portal in front of you. When you exited the pocket dimension, you found that your portal projector was exactly where you left it, webbed securely to a nearby wall. The plant creature made a trilling sound, lifting off of your shoulder slightly as it rotated its head to get a better look at its surroundings. “That’s right, buddy. You're in The City That Never Sleeps. The Big Apple. Want me to give you the tour?” The creature quickly glanced towards you, and then away in favor of a passing taxi cab. “I’ll take that as a yes. I’m glad you’re so agreeable. And you’re such a great listener, too!” you replied, firing a webline at a nearby rooftop. “Hang on tight.” Your passenger responded by coiling his tendrils tighter around your neck and torso. “Not that tight…!” you squealed, before launching yourself into the air. The little guy on your shoulder was either buzzing with excitement, or shaking with fear. You had no way of telling which. —--------- It took you a while to get Callisto to answer the phone, but when she finally came, she was surprised to already find you there waiting for her. “I don’t think I’ve ever had to wait in line for this thing before. Are you gonna be long?” “Nope. You’re just the one-eyed sewer lady that I was looking for. I’d like you to meet my new friend.” you said, holding out the plant creature for her to see. Frowned down at it, and then back up at you. “I…what is it?” she asked. “You know, I haven’t really given him a name yet. I don’t even know its gender. Could be a girl plant. I don’t care either way. I’d like to think that I’m pretty open-minded.” “Doesn’t answer my question, but I’m thinking that you don’t know the answer to that either.” she concluded. “So let’s try this: ‘Why do you have it, and why are you showing it to me?’.” (Cont.)

There weren’t any here in this part of the sewers, so you couldn’t test your theory before she showed up. Callisto gave the plant creature an assessing glance. “Is that something that it can do?” You shrugged. “I don’t know, but I thought it’d be fun to find out together. What do we have to lose if I’m wrong?” Callisto bit her lip and glanced down the other end of the tunnel. With a sigh, she turned around and started walking back down the way she came. “I suppose weirder things have happened. Come on, then.” You and the plant creature exchanged a look. “I think she likes you.” It wiggled its arms and stared up at you unblinkingly, as it had always done. “And she didn’t even complain about the smell. You’ll never meet a more considerate lady in your life.” You heard a groan from Callisto in the distance, well aware that she could hear your every word with her exceptional hearing. —---------- A few minutes later, she brought you a path that was lousy with thick, gnarled tree roots. Some of them were as thick as your arm, and some were as wide as your entire torso. You’d be that even Wolverine would have trouble cutting through some of these! It looked worse than what she’d described over the phone. There were a few narrow openings between the roots that you could probably squeeze through if you were sufficiently motivated, but the same couldn’t be expected of the other Morlocks. Well…maybe the paper girl that Callisto told you about. She’d probably be fine. “Well?” Callisto gestured for you to step forward. You walked up the complicated tangle of roots and set the plant creature down in front of it. “Alright. I’m not sure how much of this you can understand, but we could really use a miracle. Do you think you could move these roots out of the way?” you asked it. It looked up at you, and then turned to stare at the nearest root. Slowly, it extended a tendril and pressed it against the moist bark. Before your very eyes, both limbs fused together, until the point of separation between them was almost indistinguishable. “Whoa…” you breathed. “What’s happening?” Callisto asked. Just then, the tree roots began to shift and twist. Callisto cursed and nearly jumped back as a root that had been close to her foot slithered past like a slow-moving snake. Little by little, each one exited the tunnel and crawled back out through the holes they’d created. The last to go was the limb that the plant-thing had been connected to. And you could’ve swore that it was waving goodbye to it as it retreated.
“What the hell…” Callisto breathed.
“It worked…” you said, sighing with relief as you gently patted the creature’s head.
“It actually worked.” Callisto confirmed. “I can hear those roots up there. They’re replanting themselves somewhere further up, splitting apart and diverging to cover a wider area. At the very least, they aren’t cutting through any more pipes.”
“So that means this guy really is the solution to your problems.” you proclaimed, holding it out to her.
Callisto stepped closer and held her hands out to accept him. The plant creature hesitated for a moment, before jumping into her arms.
“Aww, he really does like you.” you laughed, watching as a particularly slimy tendril slid up and down the right side of her face.
“Lucky me…” she sighed. “I’ll still need to call Polaris to fix these pipes, but at least now she won’t have nearly as much work to do. Thanks, Huntsman. You’re a lifesaver.”
“Hey, what’re friends for?”
Callisto almost smiled, but the moment was ruined by a stray tentacle getting a little too close to her mouth. Callisto flinched back and sputtered, and you couldn’t help but laugh as she struggled to get the creature under control with a few tentacles of her own. The plant-thing seemed both confused and impressed by them.

Donny can’t be the only plant mutant with a name.” you said. “Oh, you know what they say about naming strays.” she replied, finally managing to restrain each of its limbs. “If you give them a name, it’ll be harder to let them go later. And I’m not really in the market for a baby swamp monster.” “But you take in strays all the time. It’s kind of your thing. You’re like the Mutant Mother Teresa.” you argued. Callisto tilted her head to the side a bit, almost as if to say that you technically weren’t wrong, even if she didn’t seem too fond of the comparison. “Huntsman, I don’t know anything about this thing. And thanks to your unhelpful explanation, I’m starting to believe that you don’t know a whole lot about it either.” she said. You mimicked her gesture from earlier. “Yeah, but he’s so friendly…” “Yeah, I can tell.” Callisto grunted, having let a vine-like tendril slip while she wasn’t paying attention. “But what if he’s some sort of super weapon? What happens if I let him get wet, or if I feed him after midnight? Can you seriously guarantee that he won’t wake up one morning and decide to eat us all?” (Cont.)

“Donny trusts him.” you proclaimed.
Callisto gave you an incredibly flat look.
“Donny.”
“Yes.”
“Donny the fucking living tree. The same Donny that wore a flower pot for pants and almost got stuck in a drainpipe.”
“That’s the one.”
If Callisto had enough free hands to pinch the bridge of her nose, she absolutely would have.
“Look, I know you all used to think he was cute, but I’m not sure if he’s the best judge of character. Or of…anything, really.”
“Listen, if you’re so worried about it, why don’t you bring him to Nature Girl and get an answer from her?” you suggested. And even before the words left your mouth, you knew you had her.
Callisto looked like she’d rather do anything else in the world than ask Nature Girl for help. So, begrudgingly, she glanced down at the plant-thing, staring into its wide, unblinking face.
“C’mon, look at those puppy dog eyes.” you said, gesturing at the pair of twin, azure orbs.
“I don’t think I’ve seen it blink a single time.” Callisto muttered, sounding a bit concerned.
“I’m actually not sure if it’s able to. It doesn’t seem to have eyelids.” you observed.
The look on Callisto’s face was somewhere between pity and curiosity.
“Hmm. How about…’Barkley’.” she suggested.
“What?”
“His name. It just sort of…popped into my head.”
You blinked at her. The plant creature might’ve done so too if he was at all capable of such a thing.
“You mean like ‘Charles Barkley’?”
Callisto shrugged, looking a bit embarrassed.
“Uh…yeah. Why?”

>>5886620 We do know about a mutant community out in Las Vegas we never visited, and I’m sure Gloria might be willing to arrange some things out there if Glass plays for a team out here.
It’d be ridiculous, but if the Central Park group wants to go out and be seen there’s worse ways to do it.

>>5886630 If there was a Mutant League, Las Vegas would DEFINITELY be one of the first cities with a team.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I think a Mutant Sports League could be great for the Mutant community.
It would allow for actual professional opportunities for mutants, potentially rehabilitate their public image, and bring together the disparate Mutant communities across the United States.
The only problem is what would be the premier sport? I think Basketball is a strong contender, and personally I'd want to stay away from combat sports (so we don't have to deal with the constant "Human Weapon" comparisons plaguing the Mutant community).
Definitely not Soccer, that shit would be impossible to get off the ground in the US. Maybe baseball? That could be a fun watch.

>>5886643 Basketball is the only correct “first” option as far as I’m concerned and I don’t even like it much. Minimal equipment, easy to play and learn with few players, and most importantly is very space-efficient.
There’s good reasons for basketball being king in cities, it’s one of the cheapest sports to build and maintain public courts for and has both a low barrier for entry and to get skilled in for players who are poor. Just think of what sport Callisto’s group can (and can’t) play in the sewers to sell just how far basketball can reach.
Now, after that? Baseball and Soccer would be best from a revenue/recognition standpoint. Soccer has the biggest GLOBAL sport following, and baseball is still big in America (to a lesser extent Japan and SK). Football is probably too violent to be associated with.
Other sports from there would be as time/money/connections allow since they either require more investment for fields/equipment or don’t draw in enough money to get large-scale competitions set up.
I would fully expect the quest to only cover basketball at most. Setting up everything else could very well be decades in the making.

As soon as you got home, you took a quick shower, changed out of your smelly new suit and into the shiny silver suit that Silvermane had made for you. A few minutes later, the two thief girls that you recruited pulled up in front of your warehouse. They were driving a gray SUV that you weren’t familiar with. You didn’t remember hooking them up with a fresh set of wheels, so they either used their connections to Gloria, or they straight up stole it. So long as they didn’t get caught, you didn’t mind too much. Ember didn’t seem to share your opinion, however. She looked very concerned by the fact that she had been driven here by fourteen year old girls. She was only just now noticing how short they were when they climbed out of the car. Her look of disbelief was matched by a challenging look from both girls. The ESU dropout glanced your way, and you slowly shook your head, discouraging her from pursuing the matter any further. Ember just rolled her eyes and stepped inside. Flint was right behind her, balancing an impressive stack of pizzas on a sand platform that was jutting out of his chest. “You were right, Benny! They gave us a bunch of free pizzas when I told them that I knew you!” he shouted, his head stretching unnaturally around the stack of boxes. Ember glanced back at him, and then quickly away. She still wasn’t too used to Flint’s shapeshifting, but he hadn’t seemed to notice just yet. Instead, Ember’s gaze focused on the various trophies you’d collected over this past year. A set of giant crocodile teeth. A cybernetic unicorn horn. A deactivated android from the Shi’ar Empire. A small arsenal of alien weaponry. An orb filled with an amorphous golden liquid. A pair of prosthetic eyeballs with a red and black, swirling hypnotic pattern. A giant wheel. She paused at the wheel to study it. “Kickass…” she muttered under her breath. “Are you seriously planning to eat all that pizza? Because there’s no way all that is fitting in your fridge.” Araña complained. “I guess we’ll be eating them as leftovers for the next few months.” Benga stated, her impassive expression making it unclear as to whether she was opposed to the idea at all. “Or maybe we’ll give them to the Morlocks.” you suggested. “They love pizza.” Araña groaned. “Koa was right. You’ve got the appetite of a Ninja Turtle. I’m gonna have to start watching my figure.” You and Flint shared a laugh at that. A yelp from Ember drew everyone’s attention to her. She was stepping away from the Wall-Crawler, her eyes wide as she stared at the curvaceous white-haired beauty that sauntered out from behind it. You hadn’t even heard her come in. “Ah-ah. No touching.” Cat said, wagging a clawed finger back and forth with a teasing smile on her ruby red lips. “I just wanted to get a closer look.” Ember said defensively. “You look tense.” you observed. “Relax~. Take a load off and enjoy a slice or two.” you said, directing her towards the couch with a light shove.
Ember walked off to do just that, glancing over her shoulder every now and again to make sure that no one else was stalking up behind her.
“Bad Cat. No scaring the new recruits.” you said in a tone of fake admonishment.
Felicia leaned her head on her hand as she stared dreamily at Ember's back.
“Aw, but they're so fun to tease when they're all stressed out and jumpy. I couldn't help but pounce on the opportunity when I saw it.”
You chuckled and glanced around the room, searching for the other guest of honor.

Benga. Can I get a napkin, por favor?” After wiping off their hands, the two girls examined the map together. You pointed out a few of the significant ‘landmarks’ that Callisto marked down, as well as the general location of the Alley. Several minutes later, they’d manage to map out what they thought was an optimal delivery route. “Okay, so if your sewer lady can meet us here, we won’t have to go too far into the sewers. So long as she doesn’t mind walking for a bit, I don’t think we’ll have any problems.” Araña declared. Benga nodded in agreement. “Sweet. I’ll let them know that we’re good to start delivering their product. For now, I’d like you girls to meet your potential new roommate.” you said, calling Ember over. Araña and Benga didn’t seem very surprised by this development. They must’ve figured out what you were up to on the ride over. Oh well. “Hey, Ember. You’ve already met these two lovely ladies, but I bet you didn’t know that they were going to be your new roommates.” Ember gave you a sufficiently confounded frown, before turning it on the other two. They said nothing, their faces equally impassive. Which was impressive, given that Benga was right next to her. “Oh, I didn’t expect them to be so…” Ember said, before trailing off. “Young?” you suggested. Fortunately, Ember made more than a token effort to get to know her prospective roomies. “So…what do you guys do for fun? Do you play any games? I’m playing a few right now.” She went on to list an assortment of modern and retro games that she’d played recently, or just liked in general. To your surprise, Benga was the one to perk up at the mention of a particularly popular RPG. “You play Lost Era too?” she asked. “Do I play it?” Ember said, sounding incredulous. “It’s only the best Fantasy RPG series known to man. White Rabbit would be a hoot given her energy, especially with an Alice-themed campaign, but she’s pretty far outside our social circle. >”Got any cool stories from your previous campaigns?” Ah, memories of a level 17 Monk with magic resistance, limitless AC, and far too many skill points in Athletics and other utility skills. The DM kept trying to toss challenges that would hurt him without vaporizing the others. Lawl, said I. Rofl, in more eloquent terms. Swinging pendulum death lava pit with archers on the other side? No prob, I’ll just run over there by jumping the blades. Huntsman would approve. Also backing

Shadowrun as a street samurai, play a human turned changeling or vampire upholding a Masquerade while dealing with the things that go bump in the night, punish your enemies in the name of the moon! Alright, that last one is actually on TV but there’s probably a Sailor Moon TTRPG out there.

“Can I join your campaign too? It sounds pretty interesting. We can start holding game nights whenever we’re free.” you suggested. Ember completely forgot about Araña and gave you a hopeful glance. “Seriously? That’d be awesome! I’ve even got some pre-built character sheets that you can play around with.” “Got any cool stories from previous campaigns?” you asked. Ember nodded quickly, her gold piercings catching the glint from the fluorescent lighting. But that brief flash had nothing on the bright smile that the usually awkward girl was currently sporting. “Oh yeah, I’ve got a ton. One time, my Gunslinger–her name was Inez–and my friend’s character, Mysterio—our party’s mage—had to fight the big bad on our own because the rest of our party wiped on the way to the boss room. There were way too many traps, and I basically had to act as the back-up rogue in a pinch because-” “Is this going to be a long story?” Araña interrupted. “Because if it is, then I’m gonna get another soda.” Ember scowled at her, but you stepped in before they could start fighting again. “You should try giving it a shot, Araña. You might end up liking it.” you said. “There’s all kinds of systems and settings out there. Not just DnD. It doesn’t have to be all about Swords and Sorcery if that’s not your cup of tea. There’s cyberpunk settings with street samurai and cybernetic arms. And sci-fi with blaster pistols, spaceships and laser swords.” You mimicked the motion of waving a lightsaber around, causing Araña to frown a bit. But at least now she didn’t look entirely opposed to the idea. Ember looked at you as if she had found a kindred spirit on the team. She probably hadn’t expected anyone here to share her hobby. Especially a bunch of career criminals. Araña glanced between the two of you, then at Benga, before letting out a deep sigh. “Fine. If B’s up for it, then I guess I can give your little nerd game a shot.” Araña declared with a shrug. The look on Ember’s face said that she would’ve liked nothing better than to rescind her open invitation, but she decided against it. Maybe because this would one day become her roommate in the near future. You decided to leave them to their conversation, promising to continue your discussion with Ember another time. Little by little, your new recruit was starting to open up a bit. On your way out, you spotted Cat relaxing on your couch by herself, having a drink of…you weren’t entirely sure. Flint had picked up a mix of beverages between soft drinks, beer, wine and hard liquor. Whatever it was, though, she was taking it fairly well. When you approached her, she turned to face you, racing her cup in your direction. “Sorry if you didn’t want us drinking before the guest of honor arrived. I just thought I’d pre-game a bit before the party really got started.” (Cont.)

We’ve all had a rough few days.” you replied, plopping down next to her and throwing an arm over the edge of the couch. “Except, I seem to remember you disappearing on us for a good chunk of that night. What was that about?”
“Which night?” she asked, staring at Flint with a teasing grin on her face.
“You know which one.”
Her blue eyes flicked to you, her amusement deepening somewhat.
“Oh! That night.” she said, shaking her head as if she’d actually forgotten. “No, yeah. I hired White Rabbit and had her help me out with a few things. First, we busted a very special prisoner out of Ryker’s. Then, we broke into a large compound that belonged to the Thieves’ Guild and hid them in the safehouses of a bunch of small-time gangs.”
Your eyes widened. Cat explained this as easily as if she was crossing lines off of an errand list, using her fingers to count her various misdeeds.
“Oh, is that all?” you asked.
Cat nodded.
“That’s pretty much the long and short of it, yeah. Consider that last one as my gift to you and Freddie.” she said, giving you a wink. “Any day now, the Guild will realize that something is wrong, and they’ll trace that trail all the way back to the groups that I reverse robbed. And while they’re wreaking havoc, you kooky kids can swoop in and undermine their operations.”
What will you say?
>”I know you’ve been at this longer than I have, but do you really think it’s such a good idea to mess with the Thieves’ Guild like that? Won’t they realize that something’s up?” >”Nice try. I know you don’t care about the Maggia’s well-being that much. You snagged something while you were down there. What was it?” >”Was White Rabbit really the best choice for that operation? I mean, she’s a lot of things, but ‘subtle’ isn’t one of them.” >”And you’re absolutely sure that they won’t trace any of this back to you or any of us?” >”So there really is a Thieves’ Guild in the city. How do they operate? Should I be worried at all?” >”Who’s this special prisoner that you had to risk your neck for in a citywide attack?” >Write-in. Pastebins:

There's a chance that I might be able to post from mobile when I get a moment free, but I'm mostly going to be spending time with loved ones. I don't think the thread will fall off before I return, but if it does, just know that I'll throw another one up on Monday or Tuesday when I get back.

You snagged something while you were down there, didn't you? What was it?”[/red] [blue]“Huntsy, baby…a girl's gotta have [i:lit]some[/i:lit] secrets.”[/blue] Cat said, flashing a mysterious grin as she did. You frowned at her. Cat let out a sigh and leaned back in her seat. [blue]“Look, me and Lori did this one on our own, with no other support from the Desperados, so we have full rights to the loot. Anything I stole of monetary value is being split between us, and anything that I think could be a useful tool is being looked at by a guy that I know. The rest was deposited into the stashes and safehouses of the smaller gangs that are preparing to make a grab for power.”[/blue] [red]“You know we would've helped you if you just asked, right?”[/red] you said. Cat stared deep into your eyes for a moment, and her smile became more genuine as it slowly spread across her face. [blue]“Yeah, I know. But the less of us that are involved with this, the better. I might be willing to part with a relic or two, but you'll have to be careful when and where you use it.” she advised. “And lucky for you, Prowler won't have much use for something like that anymore, so you've got first pick.”[/blue] She moved her hand towards your face and lightly booped you on the nose with a single silvery claw. You blinked in surprise, but decided not to reward her with an exaggerated reaction. Like you, Cat found amusement in bothering her teammates. It was an unspoken hobby that the two of you shared. And it annoyed the Prowler to no end. But with Hobie retiring from the team, it truly felt like the end of an era. You silently hoped that Ember could play the straight man in your group. [red]“I forgot to ask, but…who's this ‘special prisoner’ that you had to risk your neck for during a citywide attack?”[/red] you asked. Cat's smile slipped, her easy-going demeanor replaced by a surprisingly serious expression. [blue]“...It was my dad. I broke him out as soon as I saw my chance. We agreed to meet up again after he takes care of a few things.”[/blue] Cat explained, tucking her legs into her chest and cradling her cup with both hands. What will you say?>”What was he in prison for? Is he a cat-burglar too?” >”I thought you would’ve freed that prospective teammate that you brought to our attention a few months back.” >”Whatever he's planning, he should get it done before this gang war kicks off.
