It turns out bison have this fairly unique characteristic where if they can't sense a particular threat in their vicinity, even if they hear a distant shot and one of them drops dead, they just ignore it and don't stampede. There were hunters who would go out on their own and rack up hundreds of kills in a single day on grazing buffalo herds. Nutty stuff. Where was Bonecrusher?!
