He's most commonly depicted as a timetraveller in the main canon - he's a reformatted Megatron who hates that he's now bound to Unicron and has been known to jump across time and space to try to help his alternate selves avoid the same fate. Haven't actually seen the Netflix show yet, but i believe that's the same backstory this specific Galvatron has this time around, too.
