As a kid growing up in the 90s I always found the Technic figures to be excellent. I had a few, and considered they were to Technic sets what minifigures are to regular system sets.
I was very surprised when eventually they simply didn't make them anymore.
A sad state of things, that they have been completely abandoned.

For me, soul was brought out in these sets by a combination of factors, many of which people have already brought up in the thread:
-simple builds that reflected reality in a "LEGO way" instead of trying to create identical copies or replicas of reality.
-vague and ambiguously enough situations that allowed room for imagination, creativity and user-driven narrative.
-usage of parts that allowed for simple building processes (bricks on top of plates)
-real pictures and real dioramas in advertisements, colorful backdrops, photography instead of 3D rendering.
-Homegrown LEGO IPs that set the tone and created an overarching "theme" but allowed for a lot more variation within that theme than licensed IPs.

It all comes together to create a rather unique experience especially if you take it all in during your formative years, where most experiences have a different subjective feel than later in life, and things have a special sort of magical feeling.
Maybe modern LEGO has moved away from this, maybe today's stuff doesn't have soul anymore, but does that really matter? Lego is an open-ended system, and if the current state of affairs is not satisfactory, then build yourself a different future.

Given the recent Invader GWP release how do you guys feel about the Blacktron 1 revival?
Has it inspired you? It seems to me 80s and 90s Space themes are starting to make a comeback.
