Anyways reviving from last post, anybody have good advice for mining themes, because these posts should give a general overview of what I have so far, going with stranger pieces to help builds and such, and the struggle to find enough more muted colors for a starting build before I start using the magenta/try to dig up some dark greens, another miner and currently the leader of the stuff here, just to give you an idea of the general scale here, I don’t want them to become overaccessoried but instead to hit right in the late 90’s/early 2000’s stuff

Why are a lot of people insistent on keeping every LEGO box after opening them? For one, they’ll say that it’s because if they sell them they’ll make more money, meanwhile will never sell a single set. Also, who cares about having the box if it’s not sealed? It doesn’t add much to the value. Seems like it’s just hoarding.

I have so many pieces but for what I build I feel like only half of them are useful. I should try to make those really intricate type builds that really utilize a lot of the speciality parts. My magnum opus is more or less a bunch of clear windows and black bricks.

I will post when I get to the other computer. But that's not insectoids, that's Blacktron 3.
The shelf next to it and the floor has all my Blacktron 1.
I have so far built no M:Tron (although in the next few weeks that will change, their flagship set is on the way and I have some of the smaller ones already).
I'm sorry if my color scheme deceived you, I do not yet have any Insectoids. Maybe in the future.

I dunno about flop, but not having any sets around the $15-20 mark will definately hurt the theme, just like with Monkie Kid. If they can get away with sets at that price point for their licensed themes, its wild that LEGO won't throw cheaper sets in for their original stuff

Torsos have gone through a lot of changes over time, and as the comments say, why would some faggy knockoff company make a fake lego mold (including the logo stamp) instead of just buying said blanks off of PAB and then printing onto those for much cheaper?

I also don't think there are bootlegs being sold, I think that genuine Lego minifigures are being stolen from the factories and then supplied to 3rd party sellers

What the worst part is about Dreamzzz for me is that it's the same pretentious 'look at us we're so involved in today's youth' bullshit they've been trying to sell for a while. Yeah the sets are the usual overpriced bullshit that stifle creativity in favour of showing off [Character X] from [Media], and you can argue it's the same weird diversity push that no one ever needed (or are kids really this vicious against things like vitiligo?) but they try to hang a story onto it that's all "Yeah we did a study and discovered that dreams are important to kids so we made a theme about dreams because we care about kids".

Back when i was a wee lad, I remember i was extremely fascinated with the old sets around 1994 -1999 despite being generally bland looking back at it. Then they used to insert some promo sheets inside to advertise other sets, which I remember it gave me an early orgasm.
I vaguely remember I was loving City-like and the Castle sets over whatever Franchise related sets. Also I remember i hated Bionicle…
I wonder if kids may have the same view or maybe that was just me.

As a kid growing up in the 90s I always found the Technic figures to be excellent. I had a few, and considered they were to Technic sets what minifigures are to regular system sets.
I was very surprised when eventually they simply didn't make them anymore.
A sad state of things, that they have been completely abandoned.

Not likely, Lego has shifted from using big panels to achieve size and value, to making smaller and more detailed sets with more smaller pieces.

Back in the late 90s / early 2000s during the worst of Lego's financial troubles, fans were complaining that too many large, specialized pieces were being used. They cut out all of the huge panel / special molds and focused on creating a library of more versatile shapes, largely rounded and tiled ones in a variety of colour.

The Viking Fortress that came out a few years after the rerelease of Legoredo is a very similar set though.

It could use more vibrant reddish colors for the tile bricks on the rooftops to create a contrast to avoid blandness. The reason I chose the El Condor fortress is because it appeared in multiple films and was once one of the biggest tourist attractions in Spain. Nowadays it has fallen into ruin, but in its heyday was a go-to for filming desert casbahs and even the city of Zamora from Conan the Barbarian. Loads of history that would make for an interesting build.

Lego doesn't touch much on historic themes anymore. Almost everything is licensed, then we get the odd icons, creator, idea and bricklink sets here and there.

It also doesn't make many land features and playsets. The majority of what is produced is a vehicle of some sort.

Lego switched production on minifigs and certain accessories to Chinese factories around the time of the launch of the Collectible Minifig series. Those figures were the first to be completely composed of Chinese parts and were noticeably lower in quality- weaker plastic that was more transparent with prints that rubbed off easily. Many of my early collectible minifigs have cracked torsos and feet simply from display.

Even before that, lego also switched away from producing "glossy" minfig parts to matte, which imo made minifigs look cheaper.

I used to flip clearance Lego to fund my sets so I still view it as an investment sometimes and the factory leaks do worry me. But at the same time, it's hard to complain when Lego has been so anti-consumer with certain figures and themes lately. I had to reconsider with the release of the Cody figure, which I would not be willing to buy if not for factory leaks pulling down the price.

Putting a main character like Rex into a 600 dollar UCS set is only going to encourage people to leak popular figs. Lego deserves this for their greed, both in fig distribution and exporting production to third world countries.

I've never played with any of the design programs, do they not flag objects that clip through each other? It was a free design and turned out pretty cute, but with so many gear and belt driven moving parts it took some creative tweaking to get it working.

For dust and mild crud. For built stuff you just smoosh it onto it so it gets in all the crevices and then you pull it out and it'll rip that shit right off.

If the shit's not built it's fiddlier because it's smushing individual bricks into it, but works for that too but it's not a replacement for IPA/soap when shit has weird oily shit on it or caked on grime from dodgey "I bought a bin at a yard sale" cleaning.

When I found that fig it was pretty chewed up. I had to sacrifice the face printing polishing the nicks out of it. I left the body alone and and just cleaned with a soft tooth brush, added some hair and kind of liked it.

Found this printed slope piece today in a parking lot. Looked to have been run over a few times. A soak in some hot water and a slow cool down on a good brick and I got it pretty much back in shape. Now I just need to sand the nicks down with a fine emery board.

I used to be shit at making my own original builds, so I forced myself to start making builds centered around a theme I enjoyed. After a few tries, I started making headway and now I'm better at building everything.

If you like cars, or buildings, or something like that, pick a subject and force yourself to make a few models. Don't be discouraged because they're simplistic, because the point is to train your brain to start being able to visualize connections before you make them.

Hybridising Cars and spaceships for the miner’s crafts and also construction vehicles is a good place, though these guys are a fair bit more shady than the rock raiders or power miners/aren’t above hiring a blacktron guy or two in their ranks for cheaper paycheck while dealing to a third company, again the aliens are the main menace but stuff like a spy or two and space police aren’t welcome, the big build I feel is going to be a mining train (and maybe a base that intersects), so like the rock raiders they have set up, though I have some Life on Mars aliens heads so one of those guys could have potentially been hired as a note, just gotta figure out if it’s gonna be the bright green head one or the red hair one

Understandable, I am thinking of doing a sorta HEV suit for the guy with using the security battle droid torso but backwards (the one with printing, and 2 dark orange arms with regular orange legs, and doing this for the medium green guy, he just feels like he would do that, and his original torso was red too so it’s a natural evelution, just have to figure out how to set up a brick link account

I don't think the legs were skintone, it was more of a jumpsuit thing where the torso and legs were clothing of a different colours and the arms matched the head.
It's basically just battle droid parts though (different leg build) so if you want to you can always use those in your colour of choice for a full body suit.

I got lucky and picked up a few of the movie sets on clearance. I unfortunately couldn't afford the Emmet mech or police dropship and the Seacow was sold out already.

Metalbeard build from the duel set is my favorite of what I did grab. I loved the chatacter design. The chase sets are some nice vehicles and GCBC comes with his interrogation chair which was a nice touch.

I'm wanting to get a big-ass lego helicopter set. I'm currently trying to decide between these two.

The dino-attack one is much bigger and has more solid contruction. But the agents one has better colors, theming, and side-build imo. What do you guys think?

I own the Typhoon, it's a solid build- easily the best helicopter lego has ever made. Weakest part is the rotor blades, they're rather flimsy. Also terrified to dismantle it since dark red is so brittle but haven't had anything break yet.

The agents chopper is neat and I wanted it as a kid, don't own it though. (yet) Conversely the rotors on that are probably the best part of the set.

And yup, I'm aware of the agents rotor function, looks dope as hell. I'm thinking I might purchase the agents helicopter and this other agents set, the "Volcano Base"

I'm a huge fan of location builds, and the little side-build in the helicopter set looks like it'd pair perfectly with the Volcano Base location.

The volcano set also has that little other agents aircraft. They have a lot in common, so I'm thinking the two of them to go together.

Yeah I hate the modern marvel-movie "aesthetic". That particular blend of ugly futuristic sci-fi cosmic look is just awful.

Built the Falcon in Studio before buying the parts IRL because I didn't trust the current design to be able to fit armored Spartan/Marine minifigs, and I was correct; the designer is said to be working on an updated version, so I would recommend holding off on building it until the revision comes out, especially since this one uses an expensive & hard to acquire slope part in olive green (DBG is cheaper, and arguably looks better as OG lacks a good portfolio of parts)
