In a post-9/11 world, you had people fearful of the type of people who would go around trying to play world police. It's commentary and a play on all that stuff going on in the world during that time.
Again, i can understand when they tried to insert Ultimate universe sensibilities into 616 and why you don't like that. It doesn't mean i favored it though. It was just OK.
