They were designed to be a relatively cheap impulse buy and the packaging is very attractive. Having 6 to choose from without a huge amount of variation between them also meant parents could just grab whichever one is their kid's favorite color, so they made great gifts. So it's not really that the original 6 are so much cheaper than the others, and moreso the fact that the oldest products in the line aren't super expensive like most would expect.
