Basically the original idea was a sort of civil war where the red states aligned with the bad guys and the coastal states were good. Notably, texas was sort of the center of this "bad" empire. People took such offense that the new map now has a mix of coastal and red states as the badguys and Texas unaligned because don't mess with Texas.

Here's Bobby's map he made at the start of this, involving the good east coast blue states vs the evil southern red states based out of Texas, who have conquered parts of Mexico. The bad guys were also more low tech compared to the good guys, since they were red necks.
