I think Lego can provide a weird in-between state. I stopped pretend-playing at around 12 maybe. But as an adult I've still been making up backstories, sorta like building a world, while putting those pieces together. You now, why are certain details the way they are, and so on.
It's not "playing" really since I don't move minifigs around and make noises or imagine events, but there can still be a story there bound into those toys.
