I can imagine they are being playful in a very old-school "we was just hackin' on you, Billy" kind-of way. where the cruelty is not to be taken directly.
I've bought a Gundam type thing before and it had a very similar vibe to Lego, where your hard work and effort is eventually rewarded with a cool model, but having said that, Lego seems to be doing Gundam type sets already and have been for years.
