The general premise is that they were new characters in the style of old Transformers toylines, even going so far as to use the same gimmicks and sculpting style for the mechanical details. For example "Sculltap" is heavily based off the Jungle Planet beasts from TF: Cybertron while "Witchshot" is a Magical Girl version of the Decepticon Seeker jets.

You can even tell because Oratorian just folds his limbs into a box and has his gun form the nosecone while Sculltap has a much more complex set of panels.
