when train reaches destination and has to go back, they just move to other end - driver always takes front seat, conductor usually spends time in 1st free car/cabin. locomotive driver sits in cab and controls the way train goes, slows down, speed up etc
conductor is like main administrator, makes sure train is ready to departure station, checks doors, checks for any visible technical failures... and also takes care of possible suiciders who jump on rails. one of my family members works as train conductor and he says this is the worst part of his job when they have to deal with this mess
