I shouldn't have to tell you this, but:
- don't buy sets, except "about one year after their launch" (when the price hits its all-time low), use websites like rebrickable to get inventories and instructions of sets with insane prices
- alternatives to bricklink exist: have a look at brickscout (if you're German) and brickowl (if you care about knowing immediately shipping costs)
- always order "new" parts (I mostly order "used" and 80% of those "used" are actually like new, but that 20% was often disappointing)
- use a CAD, and check parts price/availability before using something of bizarre color/shape
- have your stash ordered by color and shape, so that you will know what parts to use to minimize orders
- finally, your MOC should be "modular" because sooner than later you'll want to show it somewhere.
