Of all the various themes out there in Lego, trains are probably the most self-reliant on third party offerings (Motors, track, wheels, etc). If you'd rather drop $40 on motorizing a train over the ~$65 for a Hub + Train motor (Or $90 for a Hub+Large motor) and don't mind a slower run I recommend grabbing a CircuitCubes bluetooth set.

The only non-Lego parts are the wheels (3D printed ones I got from here https://bricktraindepot.com and the motor and batterybox/bluetooth receiver (from CircuitCubes). Everything else is pure Lego.
