Well done stuff or minor tweaks like making a hole just big enough for an intricate fit, or a dab of glue to so a magnet stays put for an action feature I think is fine, screw the haters. Same with the tube clipping and whatnot, That stuff is way different than like gluing an entire model together. If there is a reasonable way to do something in all official LEGO without being overly cost prohibitive, I'd always try that first, but sometimes it just ain't possible.

I bought some aftermarket / remade cloth sails for pirate ships which is also a totally acceptable non-LEGO inclusion, same with stickers and whatnot. Was planning to post the sails so other people could see at some point. You can get a whole set of aftermarket new ones for the cost of a single old ratty official sail.

The paint isn't flawless but at least passable, prob looks just fine at a distance.

The catch is you'd be paying for a brand new part. Old parts present all sorts of problems you mentioned: cracks, holes, dents, scratchs, UV/heat discoloring. Unfortunately, plastic also ages, so no matter if it is misb, after 20 years it's overall still worse than a brand new part - and comes with the risks of age associated.

I wouldn't mind paying 15-20 bucks for brand new parts, but for 20-30 years old plastic it's harder to justify - I'm not an ultragigacollector, just a guy rebuilding childhood sets and buying parts for the occasional moc. Parts in pick-a-brick and the likes have always been more expensive than in sets, but putting those parts back into rotation would dillute their costs.

I mean, would it hurt that much to include a vintage mold baseplate every 3-5 years or so, then for every 100 newly colored baseplates, make 1 vintage colored batch? Or just license it and call it a day.

It's not only baseplates, though, there are plenty of 'common' parts which were unique to X/Y/Z set (model team giant truck has unique wheels and doors, for instance), and there are also sticker sheets, rubber and cloth parts. You can find very, very good replicas of stickers and cloths being made by fans, iirc there was even a guy making sails that were better quality than the originals.

Just for reference I am also the guy above who mentioned buying the aftermarket sails recently. I guess I have a bit different valuation, as if 20 year old plastic is still in good condition + very rare, I have no issue with spending a small premium on it. Age doesn't matter, just condition.

Screw it, guess I'll post the cloths comparison too.

OG Lego flag on the left, aftermarket right. Most obvious issues are that the colors are more dull, and the flag is not double sided.

The cloth is less fine, more like the newer spongy capes, and the edges do have a singe / burn color on some parts (laser cut to prevent fraying and such).

If I were to buy this original flag + sail, it would cost over $100 (if I could find them, and would likely be creased / folded / fraying).

This flag + sail aftermarket was about $25 shipped. The quality is obviously not up to LEGO standards, but for twenty bucks... I am satisfied. Looks just fine at a distance, and I don't have to care for them like a wedding dress while handling, worrying about sun damage, rigging them up, etc.

A good affordable reproduction of acceptable quality, but obviously not premium, and for the price, I am just fine with that.

Will post a part two with the other set I bought (which I like more).

Here's the Spanish Armada reproduction cloths. I like these ones better. Everything said above is still relevant, such as the duller colors, but it's a bit less noticeable.

I included an OG blue / white sail for reference. If I were to buy these sails used, they'd probably look way more like that. Yellowed, beat to shit, creased, fraying. This aftermarket set was ~$30 and for used ones it'd be $60-$70 for the set. Not as significant of a savings but again... these are very hard to find in good condition.

Satisfied for the price. If anyone has a better source for quality reproductions, I'm all ears.

And on that note... does anyone have any recommendations for replacements to the starched LEGO string? I uh... have some rigging to do.

nta, it's not so much about the price but the problem is that these baseplates are very, very fragile. So it's hard to use them without care. You must always be alert to not further damage it, and it'll only get worse with time.

3D printing a piece like this wouldn't be cheap though.

The stickers and unique pieces are the worst offenders. There's a piece for the schooner, I don't know the name, but it's a common 3,18 pole that branches into four more poles, but it's colored blue, it's super high priced. It wouldn't kill to release this element in multiple colors. Even if it was through a third party.

There's so much to say about the sails. LEGO hasn't even shared which kind of gum they use on them, so if you wash it you are screwed.

The worst part is that even if you use some soap, the damage is already done, they basically only bleach the yellow.

The sets I bought are expensive for the amount of items compared to $50 for 6 big sails for the schooner, I was tempted by that set but I already have a full set of other sails I'm repurposing for a very big ship, and I wanted to try out these two for the small black/green and white/blue hulls.

For giggles I looked at how much it'd cost for a full set of schooner sails and it'd be about $200 with bricklink prices. Fucking yikes. A great show of why I went looking for reproductions.

I will say the most notable dulling of color is in the black, and given schooner sails are only black / white, you'd have to be ok with the black appearing like the pirate flag I showed. The duller colors and the small tinges of burning from the laser cuts are the main complaints I can fathom.

The reproductions are 2-5x+ cheaper than originals and are guaranteed to be in perfect/new condition compared to used ones (even if the production quality is better), so with all of those factors considered, I am happy/satisfied.

I think it's probably too much to ask for near perfect replicas at an affordable price. These are better than acceptable. A really admirable and faithful attempt.

Now that you've mentioned it, it's very possible that LEGO still has the original molds, because these pieces were used only in one/few models. If they rented the molds to third parties to produce the pieces, the pieces would still be of high quality. I highly doubt that they printed more than 1 million of them.

Funny thing is that palm tree piece is STILL in production, just not in blue (also they were the lamps on the back of the ship so they always got knocked / fell off, easy to lose, and people need replacements).

I have a wanted list on BL of stupidly high priced parts just so I know to keep an eye out for them in bulk lots. Like on the topic of palm trees, the light bluish grey palm tree trunk piece is over 5 bucks a pop, stuff like that.

From what I read, they don't even retire the molds because of loss of precision on the fits, but because of loss of precision on the flat faces of the parts. When the mold becomes too 'porous' the parts start losing their shiny reflections.

At some point they used to concrete old molds into the factories floor and just order new ones.

Nowadays they have a special storage for molds, they keep the ones for retired parts there. In theory any retired piece can be produced again, but Lego likes reprojecting parts instead. From an engineering perspective, it makes sense, many old parts were indeed fragile - hinges come to mind.

As for completely 'lost' parts, I don't think there are any. By 1990s their factories were already pretty automated, I suppose they were already creating the 90s parts in CAD and digitalizing the older ones. It wouldn't be that much work as most special parts would be from the 80s. 70s was still 90% common bricks with the ocasional panels, trees and wheels, ball joints, so not much to do.
But it's also easier to order new molds this way - just send the file to the mold company and specify the tolerances. In any case, I'm inclined to believe they keep all that information in paper as well, for safety.

As for Elves, I wouldn't worry, it's a recent theme, and one that enjoyed a lot of success. People loved the colors on the sets. It's off right now probably because of a 'saturation' thing more than anything else.

I have this catalogue from 1996 and I haven't found this exact one online. Brickset lists the US and EU releases of it, but they have some differences. It's from Australia but it has some Chinese text in it alongside English.

Simple but effective. I'd much prefer the other clip be either black or brown for symmetry though (I like the brown more for whatever reason but the black could be for shackles).

I love that rope bridge piece, probably one of my favorites. Mine is covered in dings stress marks.

I've got 3 of the Caravan Family Holiday. I've only built the caravan one and the lighthouse. The car is a really nice build, the caravan is pretty detailed inside. The lighthouse seems a bit desperate for parts but still a decent build. I got the sets cheap for parts, I don't think I'd pay the full RRP for it but then again City isn't a big interest for me.
I haven't got the other one you mentioned so I wouldn't know.

Agree. Awful not even in charming 80s/90s way. more like garbage Juniorized style everyone and their dog hated near early 2000s. so they aren't especially sketchy or anything, it's just a brand new seller. they have actual photos of their product so that is a good sign. on all the sets of theirs I looked at they have the lowest price for a sealed set from NA, that's probably so they can get some sales for reputation so people aren't hesitant to buy from the, or it's to get people to buy their shit so they can scam you idk. like look at their listing for 42070, their listing is at $300, $50-100 cheaper than the other options available. just kinda weird.

It's an abrupt jump from Insectoids to Life on Mars, but you have to remember Rock Raiders and Star Wars were in the middle, new windshield pieces and ratcheted hinges were introduced there. The rare colors also make a disconnect from themes before and after it, even with the palette we have nowadays. Even the Earthlings with vehicles like the three and mono wheeler were weird.

As a kid, this is one of the only sets I was ever disappointed in getting. The entire set is 530 pieces. Not including side build and figures, it left a little over 400 pieces to build an actual castle. Everything felt juniorized with massive panels and pieces with big gaps that didn't blend in at all. The baseplate was difficult to build anything else on because it had 4 massive holes in each of the corners and it felt like it had few actual studs to build off of. The figures also were mediocre as Lego thought it was a good idea to do multiples of specialized characters and just include them over and over again, instead of army builder type figures like in previous castle sets.

It was also super expensive. Like $120 Canadian back in 2000. Which is like $200 today taxes in. Which is bizarre since that set really depicts the ultimatum of Lego's cost cutting measures back when it was near bankruptcy.

Sure, you don't risk carbon monoxide poisoning in this one, but you have to use a ladder to get to your home. And for some reason there's a huge hole in the interior wall so that every crook can look straight in and grab your stuff when they are using the stairs in the station.

The rent must be really cheap.

It's part 30271px2 if you're curious.

To get a good condition one, looks like it'd cost around 50 bucks on BL, and about the same on ebay.

This raised baseplate style was my least favorite just because they always crack on the inside valley. The other 3-D plates have a more rigid structure overall compared to that weak spot. It did get a ton of interesting recolors though.

Yeah for some reason I always found the set a bit lackluster for a big base / ship. At least it's still really affordable because it's not super sought after. For sets like that I just buy the cool parts I'd want to MOC with like the big green panels on the back.

I think the stingray stormer utilized the giant disc panels better, it manages to have a decent bit of interior.

Have you ever been to Brick Fest before? I went to the Philly one, never been to a Lego convention before. It was a bit of a let down. Not that many people displaying mocs, and the majority that were on display were lackluster or worse.

The issue with the Arachnoid Base is that when you dock the two components of the vehicle, the butt of the front bug gets inside the rear dome, so you lose a lot of space.
One solution is to use the stancheon parts that come with the small tower to raise it above the stinger. Then you get a second floor where you can expand the control room with regular plates and slope pieces. Just be careful because your profile got higher and may be more exposed to the bugs.

What are your average LEGO Store experiences? I only go to mine for exclusives or to get new releases faster than with online shopping. The store employees seem really friendly and helpful but in a "If I don't my manager will fire/kill me" kind of way. Whenever there's parents with children it feels like they're actually the unwanted customers because it's always a mixture of parent/child arguing, screeching/crying children and getting in the way of other customers while leaving with barely a 50,- purchase. The cashiers tend to have this sigh of relief when I check out with 200,-+ worth of boxes and ask for their names on the receipt. And I do give max positive reviews with an extra bit of compliment towards the named employee because A) It's the only nearby physical store, if it's gone I'm fucked and B) I may be an insufferable AFOL and an asshole, but even I feel sympathy for people working in retail.

Got the chance to talk a bit with some employees including the store manager when the store was just opening that day and no other customers were around.
Yeah, a some of the friendliness and enthusiasm is obviously mandated and they actually shared everyone's disappointment/concerns about the pretty damn high prices and declining quality and were just as baffled by stuff like the infamous Ninjago monastery training set boxart as we here are but sadly and obviously can't really do shit but give out replacement parts from the PAB wall when possible.
The complaints aren't even that uncommon and apparently they once even had a case where one day some guy walked into the store, handing them a bunch of blue plates that they could easily crumble in their hands - I was actually surprised and had to ask again if they didn't actually meant brown.

Lego sets 2554 and 2556. The former was one of the "biggest" sets I ever had. The latter was the biggest parts pack I ever got. I liked the F1 car as it was, but I wanted the parts more, so I ultimately ended up breaking it down and using the parts for MOCs.

Like here, the railings in the upper left are for something I ordered and didn't use. The blue technic panel covers the arches over the windows, but I got a few different colors in the order, assimilating the ones I didn't choose. The technic hose snakes across the plants over a skylight and goes down the side of the building and is going to be the eavestrough. Still need two more floors and a cap for the chimney.

I just opened a capeshit set (70921) I got on ebay that was supposed to be new, only to find it had been previously opened and the three expensive minifigures removed. I have never seen this before but then again I usually don't buy capeshit with rare minifigs. The seller has 100% positive feedback except one neutral feedback recently where a guy said some pieces were missing from a minecraft set. Sucks, but you really have to double check the tape / seals when buying stuff if it's been sitting on a shelf for a while. I'd say it is really rare but obviously does happen. Did the minifig stealers attempt to re-seal the bags, and the box didn't look suspicious?

Shit happens and I doubt someone with high feedback would be trying to scalp you.

It got really bad in Knight's Kingdom II. That was the line I mostly grew up with and you'd end up with like 4-5 of the same rainbow colored knight and tons of Vladeks. Of course, you reimagine them as just being soldiers, but Lego really didn't like including foot soldier or side-character type figures in sets during that time.

Yeah he said he bought the set at Target a while back and the fact that he refunded my money so quickly (around $52.00), makes me think he was not the one that took the figs. Whoever did do it attempted to tape it back up so it doesn't look like it was opened but if you look closely you can see the tape is not in the exact same spot originally, with sticky residue obviously visible because of the collected dust on it. They madr no attempt to reseal the bags but the openings in them were pretty small.

There was the chess set though, it had 8 of Vladek's minions as pawns (9 if you count the king who was yet another one but with a crown). I wasn't a fan of the villain helmets as they look too exaggerated like World of Warcraft shit. The main 4 heroes though are alright (their colours were better balanced the following year), but their colouring only works in breastplates and helmet visors to give off the essence of a very fancy knight. Here the pawns look cheesy in baby blue pajamas, hats and crossbows.

I liked those helmets, though I didn't have much better at the time. It sucked growing up as a castle fan in the worst era for castle sets. At least Vikings was good.

Probably why I don't get Castlefags in general because I grew up with Knights Kingdom II
It had some good sets though, at least for an 8 year old.

Yeah, this was one of my first sets and I remember both being amazed how the suspended bridge worked with the spike trap, and also it was the first set I ever had that came with a trapdoor that I became slightly obsessed with.
