Who started this meme? God forbid people want to build and play with something cool that they recognize rather than "Firetruck #196" or "Ninja Pirate Robo Mega-Mech vs Amazon Female Warrior and her Ogungobot Cannon in outer space".
Not having licensed sets and themes is how you get an endless stream of Dreamz and Chima landfill fodder. I would have agreed with you if Lego actually made good original sets and designs but as it stands the license stuff are their best products currently.
