Truth to be told, I think I might prefer him in yellow. But since his body was made of sand, tan or dark tan would've probably been the best compromise.
I think Toa Ignika was meant to be gold, too, but I don't have anything to back up my claim.
Yellow and gold have a strange history in Bionicle. I remember back when we learnt about Lhii, who was explicitly described as yellow and everyone took for granted Lhikan had a similar color scheme. The official set came out, and a bunch of people (myself included) were dumbfounded to see he was actually gold like Takanuva. And then the movie made him yellow, red and... gold? Silver? so his Hau matched Jaller's in Mask of Light.
And yet they did the exact opposite with Mata Nui, a gold character turning yellow.
