Matchbox just did a huge retro series, completely unannounced, and its selling like hot cakes. It includes retro remakes of old generic playsets and cars as well as a bunch of new stuff. Traditional playsets to, no grand lore filled nonsense with some movie tie in.
People like simple traditional toys. If lego did a real true return to classic space, castle and other simple themes without the grand over reaching lore that's tainted everything these days, it would also sell like crazy. Even if they had to lump the sets in with creator as a test run.
Because most kids don't actually care for brands or licesnes or lore. They just want toys to play with.
