Christ, it's amazing how obtuse people are about that twist. Minimus is the G1 Magnus personality in IDW. He's the white Prime given a new design, a backstory, and a reason for wearing an armor that looks totally unlike himself. The predecessors are irrelevant because we don't know them, especially since they were retconned in after years of Ultra Magnus appearances.
Let's say another Ultra Magnus who's widely liked gets the legacy backstory through a canon comic or a lost cartoon episode that surfaces. Animated, for example. Are you going to start whining that Animated or Prime series Ultra Magnus isn't the "true" Ultra Magnus, when you've accepted him as such for years prior, just because he got a backstory where he borrowed the appearance of an ancient dead dude we've never even seen?
