While I do like that bit of engineering for how clever and simple it is, there's a point where there are diminishing returns on how much effort it takes to hide away alt mode parts, as the new MP releases are clearly showing us. As long as it doesn't get in the way or seriously inhibit articulation, I actually really like alt mode kibble, even when it's huge.
Case in point, Ectotron. People always complain about the front of the car just hanging off the shoulders, but it's literally my favorite part of the figure. It gives him a lot of personality and is the only part of the iconic alt mode that is actually on display. Plus, ostentatious armor is a pretty integral part of mechs and transforming robots anyway. It gets boring if everything has a basic streamlined humanoid silhouette.
