You're not wrong about the price and reliability issues of modern engines. Everything made between 1916 and and the mid 1990's are just about bullet proof, tho and use electromechanical controls instead of solid state electronics. A lot of younger guys have gotten into the older Lionel trains. I suppose there's something kind of liberating about running a massive die cast locomotive that buzzes, smells of ozone and that you could beat a man to death with in a space smaller than the average HO layout.
