I think he's far more interesting as a computer virus/brain tumor allegory than some sneaky backstabbing Sauron rip off. as for the lesser makuta themselves, I'm partial to some of the sets so I don't want to pretend they just don't exist, but they'd probably be better as just an evolution of rahkshi; beings created by the makuta but given vastly more autonomy and personality.
