I don't know if this is me rationalizing my lack of money but anything with more than 1000 pieces sounds like a chore to build for me and I find that the more pieces are used the less LEGO the model becomes. And with 1000 pieces it can still be comfortably built in a few hours, doesn't break the bank, has a good amount of detail while still being blocky and doesn't take a lot of space to display.
I am talking about LEGO System and non-building models. I don't have any experience with buildings and I guess there the math is different.
