Go look at artwork for inspiration. Want to build a toa/humanoid? Go look up scifi robots and mechs. Just for a starting point you can try to recreate it as much as possible using pieces. Look at things like armor, panels, etcs, and try to see if any pieces resemble them, then try to piece them together.
For example, here's this random artwork I found on google. The chest area reminds me of a hero factory chest piece, so that was the piece I began with. Then I chose this black armor piece for the stuff in front on the chest. Now you have to find ways to connect the two. The hero factory chest has bar/clip connections, so I used those to connect the black panel piece.
Then you just keep doing the same thing for everything else until you get something you like. Not sure how to recreate the arm/leg/etc? Go look at some other artwork for inspiration.
