I primarily come from a wargaming background but I'd like to get into model trains. I generally try to be thrifty with my hobbies, buying things secondhand, repurposing toys and crafting things.
Growing up my dad had a model train set in the basement and I used spend a lot of time helping him fix things and run his layout. He had to get rid of it all after the divorce and he died of cancer about a decade ago now. I've been thinking of him a lot lately and I've decided I'd like to start a model train layout.
I'm trying not to spend a lot on it but so far I'm not having much luck. None of the Goodwills, Salvation Army's or any other thrift stores in my area seem to have much in the way of model train stuff. Is there a market for used model railway stuff? Where is the best place to go for cheap model train stuff?
I also am not certain what scale to use. It would be cool if I could repurpose some of my wargame terrain to save money. I game primarily in 20mm and based on my research I think either S scale or OO Gauge would work but I don't know if those are affordable scales or available widely in the US?
Finally are there some current recommended books/guides for beginners you all could point me too? Especially anything on how to do it on a budget?
