The earthquake was probably a factor as well which is probably one of the reasons why the Deluxe Soundwave, Leadfoot and others weren't released outside of Japan. Kids are drawn into the franchise by the media it's connected to, not looking into the box and saying "That's shit" (at the very least it isn't enough to make the brand flop completely"). If the media was well recieved by the public outside of China, then it probably would have sold fine but it flopped and the movie was absolutely and undeniably a factor.
