Optimus throws away the Matrix declaring he's not fighting Megatron as the leader of the Aubobots, "but as just a Transformer named Convoy!" The whole point is that Optimus is admitting that Unicron is right, that the only thing separating Optimus from Megatron is his responsibility to others, and he's choosing to throw that way now to have one selfish battle with Megatron, for no reason but their mutual hatred and enjoyment of the battle. The point is hammered in with Megatron's shocked reaction when Optimus starts the fight with a (brutal) first attack and goes from there.
