The tail connection is kind of neat imo. The brick above the tail is a 1x2 snot brick that's only connected to the back of the minifig's legs. The gap it leaves is equal to the thickness of a minifig tail piece (i.e. half a plate thick). The studs under the tail extend slightly higher than the tail piece and into the brick above it. Not enough to form a connection, but enough to keep the tail in tightly. I can pick it up by the tail with no problems.
