If you atomize thing that is not pure water, you need to extract thing from environment, plain and simple. Respirator alone is not enough, "good ventilation" that moves air around the room is not enough. Either the contaminated air leaves the room or it passes through filter that removes the contaminant. That remains true whether you spray lacquers, acrylics, gouache or food coloring.
