FDM has some pretty visible layer lines before finishing work, but the durability and colors and shit have been in the bag for a while now. People have been making toys, actual playable and sellable toys. I own some personally and they're very fun to play with. ToyMakr3D is a good example, he makes these massive articulated figures and either sells or gives away the STLs for free.

But the product quality is already there and there are an increasing amount of people doing it. That's about as a good as we can hope for.
