For every person I see say not to get them and then go on a tirade about how if you are poor you shouldn't be in the hobby I see another two using them and getting okay results.
The general consensus is that they have a use but you'd be better off getting a proper set up. Some models can be converted into proper set ups though which is worth considering.

That image seems about right for what to expect. They aren't great for fine usage but if it's for someone new to the hobby it's not worth getting them a full compressor set up. If they later on want a better compressor it's simple enough to swap one in.

i used one for about a year before i bought a full size compressor, though i binned the shitty chinkshit airbrush it came with after about a week and got good one.
they're fine for basecoats, but they struggle with fine detail work because you can't get a consistent airflow at low psi because of the lack of a tank, and you need a mac valve because they have no pressure regulator. they also struggle with things that would normally be ready to spray out of the bottle with a full size compressor because they don't put out enough psi, but obviously you can just thin them and do more coats.
also the battery on mine started dying after about 9 months, which is what prompted me to upgrade really.
so yeah they're not very good and not worth the effort, but if you literally live in a cupboard and can't afford the space for a real compressor, and have no intention of ever doing anything beyond basecoats, they'll do the job.

not really, even if you live in a single bedroom you can stash a compressor, portable spray booth, and fold out table under a bed or on top of a wardrobe or something. the japs manage it even in their cupboard-sized tokyo apartments

I don't think so, personal opinions on the series aside the BD sales have been good from what I've seen and (more importantly to bandai) the kits have been selling well, so I think they either just wanted to do a shorter series (like Build Fighters) or they'll have another season later on where everyone is older and there is some new threat.

I haven't bothered watching any gundam since IBO started. Was TWfM worth watching or forgettable? the mobile suits definitely didn't do much for me.

I enjoyed it for the most part, I liked most of the characters and seeing them interact and the action was good.
My main issues is Miorine was pretty boring and I never bought the feelings she supposedly had for Suletta, which sucks because she has a lot of screen time.
Also the ending feels rushed (likely because they're stretched thin working on the Hathaway and SEED movies).
So I wouldn't call it amazing but not terrible either, I'll likely give it a rewatch which I can't say about every gundam.

it's pretty divisive so it depends on who you ask. personally i thought the prologue special was excellent, season 1 was really weak and i almost didn't pick up season 2 because of it, but season 2 is a lot better. it's far from the best gundam series but it's not awful

I have a friend who works for spacex, and he gave me 6 of these bulk packets. each packet contains 100 chisels/blades. they work great, but I just got God hand nippers so i rarely have to use these now except for the occasional clean up. Sandpaper is the way to go though (especially if you paint)

It's a Bandai standard release, it'll most likely come back around at some point. That could be years from now though, so ask yourself how patient you are.

I own it, I can tell you it's a nice kit. It also comes with the parts to make Ground Type, my favorite Graze form.

I don't think these are airbrushable, they may have large undissolved particles that will clog the nozzle. Mig does have some sort of acrylic airbrushable shaders but that's a different product.

There is nothing wrong with airbrushing enamels per se, I am talking specifically about Mig enamel washes, which are kinda trash compared to Tamiya panel liners and MrWeathering washes in that they contain larger particles that are not completely dissolved no matter how hard you shake them (probably because of lower quality pigments). They are okay for brush application but they can clog a sub-millimeter nozzle. If you still want to airbrush enamels get Tamiya enamels, thin them to a wash consistency and spray away.

finally finished my Zeta ver Ka. this build was done with using water-based spray paintcans with water-based gloss topcoat spray paintcan. (it was miserable experience overall)

here is my honest views on it
The build was very nice, definitely one of the pinnacles of MG ver Ka. everything falls into place when you build it and put it all together.

very minimal nubs, a few undergates but a lot of the normal nubs are hidden or out of normal view.

but comparing it to the original lineart, they almost got it, but, the shield is still too small, the thighs is too long and the leg is not stumpy enough.

i was the very first one of the guys that laughed at the promotional pictures that showed the huge gaps in the back of the knees. the Zeta v2 doesnt have that gap

However, after building it, it finally clicked and see how the design works, and you have to applaud Katoki for making the legs work.

the articulation is very very very very good. definitely the high point of this kit.

though definitely scary to pose since some of the articulation points are just small hinges and connectors that you may fear that will break. but it works, definitely made articulation for the better.

for the pros:
1. definitely an improvement over Zeta ver 2

4. despite how complicated the instructions may look, its a more straightforward build than many MG.

for the cons:
1. too pricey, Zeta ver Ka is more expensive than ZZ ver Ka (ZZ ver Ka price shoots up if you include shipping because of weight), though I guess its understandable, the yen cratering and probably the R&D on this kit made the price really high compared to other MGs
2. lack of the hyper mega launcher and stand. you expect that they will at least throw in a stand and the hyper mega launcher from the v2 with that price, but no, you just get the Zeta and the rifle, shield, beam saber effects, and the sets of hands
3. it really needs a stand. because the Zeta has a weird way of transforming the legs suffer. all the center of balance is on the calves. since the knees can swivel forward and backward, you will find trouble of making standing up. and the feet doesn't help because it is very hollow and almost weightless.
4. focus on color separation over frame detail and simple construction. I admit, I am spoiled by the MGEX Strike Freedom with its multi-layer frame construction. the kit focused too much on color separation, which is good, but the frame detail is haphazard

a really good kit, probably the best kit in 5 years. score is knocked down because of the price/parts ratio and the need for a stand.

if you are getting one, I recommend putting on the decals. somehow the plain look of the Zeta ver Ka is atrocious and really need the some decals to make it more visually striking

however, you really need a mark setter and mark softer for the decals. the decals often are the on the size of a corner and the decal will overlap to the side.

as for my painting experience

my local hobby shop stocked on some water-based spray paint cans. he was kind off pressured to stock some

since i moved out and taking care of a sick relative, I have to go up the rooftop to use acrylic spray paints just not to disturb him because of the smell. so I bought some black, red, blue and white and the gloss topcoat to try it out.

BOY, it was a mistake.

other than the lack of smell, only a small odor of propelant, the waterbased spray paint has no odor at all. so it is ideal for living in small apartment and cant paint with acrylics or lacquer.

however, the pros end there. despite me shaking the can so much, sometimes it sputters thin paint, sometimes the paint is thick. Its not consistent compared to tamiya or mr color spray paintcans.

the waterbased gloss topcoat spray paintcan is another hair puller. the topcoat took too long to dry and became sticky and a dust and particle magnet.

Dont ever use waterbased spray paintcans. learn from my mistake. its back to tamiya for me.

Personally speaking: the prologue is pretty stellar, season 1 is a little slow but picks up nicely at the end while season 2 is an improvement over season 1 (though I felt they rushed through some story essential background details).

Mobile suit wise I'm a fan of most of the designs, really enjoy the Demi-Trainer.

that's the thing, the water-based gloss topcoat made it trickier. it made the kit sticky to the touch but very smooth and glossy and hard to put decals in and panel line.

even when i used mark setter, the decals slides on the kit. when i try to dab with cottonbuds to remove excess water, the decal sticks to the cottonbuds. never had that problem when doing decaling on bare plastic or painted using acrylics.

it also made it harder to panel line. when i tried the using the tamiya panel line accent color, it just slides off and drip down off the model kit.

I had to use a Gundam marker to panel line it, and it was weird it was like using a pen on a glass screen

PSA: NEVER BUY WATERBASED SPRAY PAINT CANS AND NEVER BUY WATERBASED GLOSS TOPCOAT SPRAY PAINTCANS

my face when all that trouble because I tried using waterbased spraypaint cans

it's very off from my goal but a mix of c304+393, was originally going to use LP-64 but for some reason concluded that it's wrong.
it looked perfect while painting so I have a sneaking suspicion that my light fixtures around my painting area are to blame, because similar issues in the past. either way, colors are a skill.
what is that green on your type 90?

I believe it was Tamiya XF-65 (Field Gray) which I got from Tamiya's 1/35 Type90 paint guide.
Type10 on the other hand uses TC-07 from Creos JGSDF color set.

If there is one thing you never need to do it is mixing colors for the modern SDF and the old Imperial military hardware. Every paint manufacturer has those colors in their lineups.

I'll admit I had little expectations, but turns out this is literally what I asked for, thank you. With a cape and maybe nicer feet he'd be absolutely perfect.
Somehow the Zssa has no listing in any local stores, but I've regained interest in the Juaggu and Zogok if you say they hold up to modern standards. The Zogok in particular is impressive for having extendo-arms as well as a hefty sword, and the Juaggu looks like it could tank a few hits while providing artillery fire, I'll hold these recs to particular consideration due to you giving it while not knowing that I love amphibious guys. The Zssa also looks very fun, going between bulky and suddenly a nimble knight.
Tangential, but do these suits have good moments in their respective shows? Unicorn and ZZ are on the list, but are their appearances something to look forward to? Or is it better to give them special treatment and abilities on my own end?

Cloth capes can be pretty cool. I've made a few for a custom in the past. Depending on the type of fabric you can glue or burn edges to help prevent fraying. Just make sure to iron it out a bit (I forgot to do this before picrel).
You can get decent fabric in chunks at most craft stores for cheap b/c it's parts they cut or leftovers from a bolt of cloth.

If there's a 3mm hole, you can probably fit the part or an adapter, which it'll probably have a bunch of. If not, you can probably look at other 30MM kits which come with the "Joint" parts.

Put it this way, I want to build everything but I have a sense of accomplishment seeing things build out over the 2 hours I can fully set aside to work uninterrupted. Which only happens every couple of days. Last time I worked on an MG it took me about 3 weeks since I ended up opening various HGs instead of working on the ongoing project.
Maybe the issue isn't deciding on picking which one next but rather how I can stay focused on the same kit.

Why doesn't Bandai use the easy-release gates more? I have had some pretty serious arm injuries, and repetitive motions like trimming nubs are really painful after a while. So I can only work on Gunpla for a short time before getting tired.

Is there a downside to them? As far as I can tell, they make it so you can virtually just snap pieces off by hand with very little scarring or nubs left behind.

I remember when 3d printing was being hyped here on /toy/ and we had pretty good threads about it and where it was heading.

I think a lot of people were right about the resolution getting better, though the striated look is still visible and involves work to fix.
People were also saying it was going to eventually involve more durable plastics in a large variety of colors, so that it could be a substitute for toys, but that's basically a pipe dream. It's still just a modeler's hobby.

We were already there years ago homie. FDM has some pretty visible layer lines before finishing work, but the durability and colors and shit have been in the bag for a while now. People have been making toys, actual playable and sellable toys. I own some personally and they're very fun to play with. ToyMakr3D is a good example, he makes these massive articulated figures and either sells or gives away the STLs for free.

Well yeah, but it was always gonna be. There's a lot of tinkering and learning involved, just like many other artistic hobbies. But the product quality is already there and there are an increasing amount of people doing it. That's about as a good as we can hope for.

Who expected that? I was on /toy/ back then too and I don't remember anyone saying or expecting that. There was a reasonable expectation that you would need to put things together yourself, nobody was expecting a machine to spit out a fully formed Marvel Legends or anything.

Huge. It's the difference between slice and crush. The Gundam Planets in this pic are single blade, the Tamiyas are double. Single blade means easier cleanup, sometimes even no cleanup at all, and much less stress marks. But you gotta take good care of them, good single blades are expensive and fragile tools.

Also, not all single bladed nippers are made equal, I have had ones that cut poorly. Stick to something established and proven, like Gundamplanet or Godhand.

Used for what? Alcohol doesn't melt filament plastic and it sure doesn't melt solidified resin.

Alcolol is used to clean resin prints from traces of liquid resin but that does nothing for the layered look.

The last two points are pretty close to happening. DLP printers make the nicest looking prints I have ever seen, and if that new printer by Athena lives up to its claims then the force sensors can pretty much handle the fep release issues. The dream now is just to get both of those on one machine.

Depends on the specific ones, the older ones like the Mazinkaisers or ARIEL are alright but not as sturdy as the two Gravions I've built, which both felt rock solid with good engineering for the combinations.

The pegs aren't for joints, just a simple way of undoing my excessive sanding. The part is rattling and I could use the correct putty to bulk up the part to make in snug but I think I could get away with a peg.

Unfortunately, the waist balljoint does feel a bit janky. While the aesthetics of this kit indeed make it look like a MG, the lack of the inner frame is noticeable when handling it. It feels a bit floppy. I have yet to build the weapons but I'm sure the huge ass shield will eventually have issues for the arm

As for the chromed parts, they are really nothing special, they just come molded in metallic red but are very obscured because above them you put clear smoky gray parts, so they don't really stand out

the HG is the same save for the ones of the chest because those came molded with more colors and depth

I just got my first pair of Godhands a few weeks ago and have put them through their paces with 5 HGs so far. They seem just as sturdy as my trusty Gundamplanets (which have served me well for 5+ years now). In my experience, it seems like single blades are quite durable so long as you understand how to use them--cut as far back on the blade as possible, use a slow and gentle squeezing motion, don't cut clear plastic or thick gates with it.

I get my models from japanese stores that ship worldwide.
Gundam stuff is a bit harder to get my hands on. Some stores no longer sell Bandai stuff to overseas customers, so I rely almost exclusively on Mandarake and HLJ.

Howdy, friend. I'm from Canada, and getting stuff here is not always the cheapest or easiest. Pre-covid, I ordered from websites such as HLJ, Amiami, and Mandarake. These websites are easy to use from overseas. Unfortunately post-covid shipping from Japan has become prohibitively expensive unless I really want something specific and can't find it anywhere else.
We have a fair amount of stores in Canada that sell plamo/gunpla/etc., but the markups range from acceptable to absurd. If I know I'll be able to briefly cross the border into the US, sometimes I'll order off US websites (often much cheaper, even with currency conversion) and pick it up, then bring it back into Canada. P-Bandai doesn't service Canada so I have to ship to the US or buy at a high cost from a retailer here.
Regarding second-hand goods, it depends on the condition of the item. If I see good deals on Facebook marketplace and the runners are all intact, buying used isn't an issue. Amazon.ca is trash for gunpla, but usually you'll receive your goods between 1-5 days (1-2 with Amazon Prime, 3-5 without).

Goods in are pretty much universally cheaper in the US as compared to the UK. Stuff from Japan will also be more expensive simply because the UK is so much further away from Japan than the US is.

I have no problem with second hand goods. As long as the runners are intact and the instructions are included, I'll buy it.
I also buy a lot of second-hand action figures from there, sometimes minor damage that I can easily fix or ignore can make the price go down by quite a lot.

Eons ago I there was a guide linked here that talked about using electronic parts as small metal details on gunpla. I have zero electronics knowledge and googling "pictures of electronic parts" isn't helping. I remember it was like a circular object that had a little stick/wire poking out from the middle, and you had to clip each one out from a black rectangle that had many of these objects in rows. What the fuck am I looking for? Also, does a link to this guide still exist?

biggest issue isn't residue(though it can be the absolute cancer), but how you paint it since the putty most of the time will be "lifted" at a different height from the model surface making the transition inconsistent.

Hexa Gear is probably my favorite Kotobukiya model line. It has some of the best engineering on the larger kits. The Governors are a bit rough but I think that's largely just an issue of their size.

I agree that this Gundam Fight theme is pretty shit and is probably only gonna get like 3-4 entries compared to the usual 12ish, but the two before that weren't gundam exclusive and had a good selection of non-Gundam builds too. Either way, I'd rather see what a "boring" theme has to offer than an "interesting" theme that only gets 1-2 entries

It really depends. If you're using spray cans and not an airbrush though, I reckon it would help. Mr. Surfacer works well as a primer.

you don't really need a primer with lacquers (especially spray can lacquers) unless you're painting a light color over a dark one. if you do use an acrylic primer, make sure it's fully cured before spraying lacquer over it and don't blast it on too thick and you'll be fine
