The line started out as a promise of just figures as they have no money and have to rely on parts reuse to get made. Then they did creatures or a beast sku. Then they got to vehicles. Then mini themed subs. Then we even got a Castle Grayskull as a crowdfund. Scott likes to tell everyone in his videos he invented the major corporation crowdfund model and maybe this was the first. Fans were watching that meter they had weekly hoping for it to fund which it did. It was I believe $250 for the castle but that’s almost the base price for any of those today.
The sub model for the line wasn’t so bad to me after the first few quick sell outs. You paid for the first figure and then every month you’d get charged and the figs sent to you. They added themed mini sub for 6 figures and the extra beasts. As MC added more lines to the mix they all had their own subscription systems. Guru also likes to say he invented the adult collector online store which in a way he sort of did.
The roll out for the line every year kicked off at the Mattypalooza panel at SDCC. The downside to the sub was you’d basically be buying into the line every year blindly. You would know 3-4 figs tops and hope for the best. Hardcore fans who want everything didn’t have a problem but if you wanted certain things it was but day of sales were so horrible, you’d almost be strong armed into it. At the panel you’d get reveals of the last 2-3 figures of that year that you signed up for in the previous year. Then they would introduce the first 2-3 figures on next year plus the subscription bonus figure. You’d also get to see the first quarterly item which was a beast mount or weapons pack. And maybe if something big was added. On the last day of SDCC they’d always put in a little accessory in the case to tease the 4th figure in the sub. Subs opened up after the show and ran for several weeks. When things got bad with them adding shit characters or waste, a meter was added.
