As for the drybrushing, how else can you bring out the detail? Most companies don't do shit and leave it as colored plastic, which makes the toy look like it's made of plastic or tootsie rolls like pic (mostly thanks to that weak cartoony sculpt that doesn't drape like clothes should).
McFarlane's stuff looks like silk, leather, and metal thanks to that dry brushing bringing out the detail. And even when the sculpt isn't good, that weathering does a LOT. Go check out the Figma Guts prototype versus was what actually released. Despite the prototype having a very soft sculpt, the weathering makes the leather look like leather. The pants look like cloth. Even the armor starts looking like iron.
This shit? It's an unpainted plastic model. Cheap and toyish.
Again, the reason McFarlane gained so much recognition, popularity, and influenced so many companies is from the things you're criticizing. You may want toys to look like they're toys, but millions picked McFarlane, even when they knew nothing about what they were buying.
