One getting a prize and the other a "bragging rights" prize.
I understand your takes.
I participated in several and held a contest on the Lego General board. I ended up putting more emphasis on creativity with what you have and obviously how neat the building part of it was and if it was cool, cute and or made me laugh.
I'd argue the creativity of making something that evokes an emotion and making due with what you have in creative ways will always trump pure cost of materials/equipment or amount of pieces though.
But I still struggled picking one winner where one followed the rules better by filling the frame with lego but the other providing me more of an emotional effect on me but was photographed more crudely.
