It's a good skill to learn, but also it's entirely unneeded in most cases. Gundam kits aren't full on milspec autism or historical accuracy bullshit. They're made for mostly regular people, and are basically just action figures you assemble yourself these days.

Model kits like you're talking about are their own brand of autism almost entirely separated from gunpla except in the vaguest sense, in the same way a McDonald's hamburger is tangentally related to food.

Eh, good enough. Evil Haro mech is done. Only mod was basically replacing the hands with kotobukiya msg wild hands. The paint is alclads magnesium for the darker and magnesium+white aluminum at a 50/50 ratio for the lighter color. The brown is vallejo game color tinny tin and the purple is mr. Metallic gx metal violet.

Also I intended to add an LED without buying the official kit but as I suck at soldering I drastically overestimated the amount of wire and it didn't fit inside properly. And I really don't feel like re-soldering it so I'm just going to leave it without an LED. It looks funny as a tongue though.

Its honestly a fantastic kit, basically a mastergrade haro that I just took the outside shell off of. The best part is that the luttle haro at the top actually has a 1/100 haro inside it piloting the haro inside the bigger haro.

are you seriously telling me any of the recent gundam shows are meant for adults? holy shit lol. Ever since build fighters more & more of the range of gunpla kits is getting focused on younger agegroups. Bandai themselves said multiple times recently their main focus was to bring more children in to the hobby.

and yes, MG's & RG's arent anywhere near as complex as you like to think, the most complex Bandai gunpla are still basic bitch tier as far as model kit difficulty in general goes. as long as you can follow basic instructions, you can build them fine. I got my sisters kid MG sazabi ver Ka for christmas last year & offered to help him build it if he needed help, he ended up building the whole fucking thing himself and he's 10. Some kids arent as stupid as you think.

I started to build & paint aircraft kits when i was 5 or 6. Just because you cant comprehend it doesnt mean others dont start out young.

honestly even the rg nu is ass to pose without a base, it took me ages to get mine into a stable standing pose and the funnels are all floppy and fall off at the slightest touch. the waist joint also needs tightening because the funnels pull it backwards constantly. the nu is just a really topheavy design and will always have problems

all those issues are easily fixable if you know what you are doing. Even if you dont, the third party metal inner frame is $20 and makes it pretty fucking sturdy for 0 effort.

I just got back into this after something like 30 years. It cost me about $70-90 for all of the supplies that I just didn't have any more, and then another $100 for a few kits and a stand. Thats how it rolls if you're getting into it and impulsive.

What's the resell potential on some of these gunplas?
I've got some power ranger ones that I've opened to inspect them so they're no longer collectibles but they'd still sell at market rate because of quality. or am I totally off on that one?

will these things ever be worth something one day? perfect grade or metal builds that haven't been opened etc?

Unless it's a pre-90s kit. No. Almost everything since the 90s gets reprinted. You may be able to scalp based off FOMO with some P.Bandai, but it'll be minimal profits. 60USD kit, 15USD in shipping and taxes, maybe turn around and sell it for 90-100USD. So 15-25USD profit.

This Strike Noir, I had no idea what a Gundam was, just thought it was a cool robot action figure that would look good on my desk and was disappointed when I opened the box to find out it was a model kit and threw it in a closet. Anon I seriously don't know how to explain this any better. I don't have a camera to take pictures.
The edges that need to connect, that need to fuse together to remove the seam, HAVE NUBS ON THEM.
I don't understand how anyone can think it's easy to remove the nub COMPLETELY so that nothing remains to prevent the pieces fitting together with a "hair-width" gap, while ALSO not removing any material from the edge itself in the process of cutting or filing the nub away. I seriously don't get it. I feel like we live in completely different worlds. I'm getting autistically frustrated with the lack of successful communication here.

Joint issues with metal builds is a sure thing over time. They're usually pretty tight when new, but if you fiddle with it like you would a robot damashii or HG kit you're gonna fast track yourself to some weak knees and elbows. The raser does a good job. Leaves little or no discoloration marks. Great tool to have. But not the only tool you will ever need. I hardly use a hobby knife on nubs anymore. I still find sanding sponges more useful on curved parts. Stop thinking a hobby knife is the be all end all, it doesnt do anymore than leave a smaller nub.

They're double-bladed. The "good" godhands are SPN. You could've bought some other brand's single blade nipper for cheaper and achieved better results.
I'm not saying it's impossible to properly clean up a nub with a DB nipper but especially if you're snapshitting it is definitely harder.

They work pretty well, I intentionally chose a dark colored kit to work on just to see how I'm doing at cleaning and sanding. Hardest part is trying to sand properly honestly. Just the tiniest bit off center and you'll fuck it all up.

if you're comparing it to gunpla prices it's because bandai kits are underpriced compared to the competition due to economy of scale and owning their own factory. the plamax bigfoot has a higher yen msrp than most gundam master grades. i'm not sure what other brands make a kit of it (if any) but they will likely have been out of print for quite a while, the plamax is the most recent afaik.

Just a quick heads up - the Groupbuild might be given a bit of an extension as I've run into some computer troubles (Motherboard on my laptop that I store all the groupbuild related shit on crapped out and is currently on a FedEx truck to get refurbished). >B: Skip the voting and do the 14th Gundam Fight (It's one of the oldest themes nominated themes, has been in nearly every poll for themes, and has been in the top 5 more times than any other theme that hasn't made it this far. Plus it's a pretty straightforward theme that anyone could enjoy)
>C: Just do shit like always and vote for the next theme.

I'm also taking suggestions if you have any other grand ideas for the 20th build, but try to keep them feasible (ie: No PG-only builds or shit like that)

I'd say make sure to look up reviews on any kit that interests you. Bandai reprints these things for decades without putting out new versions for some kits, so some are really far behind the curve in terms of quality/standards/etc. Often times a newer HG might even be better than an old MG.

If not from there, get them somewhere else. The bandai waterslide decals have a thick transfer film. You need to hit them with a ton of softer 2 or 3 times to get that to kinda melt away. The delpi will seperate with less time in water and have a better adhesion.

your final coat doesn't have to be matte. some suits are better in gloss and satin is usually a good alternative to matte on pretty much anything. i almost never do a kit in full matte, even on primarily matte kits i usually finish certain parts with satin

you often will want to sand after priming, as grey primer (if you use it) makes imperfections a lot more visible. additionally, don't constrain yourself to only finishing with matte coat - satin often will look better on a painted build than matte. buy decal softener btw.

This is just me, but Ive used waterslides on at least 15 kits and never found the gloss coat necessary, and I tend to put on a shit load of decals. As long as they are still wet they will slide around with no problem at all. Just dab it with a wet q-tip if its not moist enough.

Well I paint so I guess my suggestion about not using gloss coat dosnt apply to bare plastic. Even when I first used decals on a unpainted kit it never looked as shitty as it does in your pic, it looks like they didnt ring out all the water with a q-tip . Again, thats just my experience.

Or you can just use gloss paint for your base coat/shading and avoid an extra coat.
As for bare plastic and flat coat, if you put enough adhesive under the decal and make sure you pushed all the air out, it will be just fine.

MG Zaku 2 ver2.0, it is one of the most standard, yet engrossingly great MG to build. other than Zaku High Mobility Type 1 and 2 (the popliteal area is blocked by the large thrusters, so it can't bend its knees), any Zaku 2 is really great

mg zaku is a great canvas to begin with. You'd probably be fine if you started with the nu but I think doing 1 or 2 other ones before will probably benefit your nu gundams look in the end

anyway, my local hobby shop is having a discounted sale on R3 Normal Layzner for $40. I am kinda mulling about it since R3 and the other non-Gundam MGs are not even being re-printed anymore and their last reprint was in 2014 (still want to have that 1/72 VF-1 kits again bandai) but I am kinda feeling I am getting FOMO'd since I really don't have an emotional connection with Layzner and the only exposure I had with him was with Neo Robot Wars when I was a kid. So even I wanted Layzner, I want it the MkII.

It's not about the plastic anon, it's the decal. If it slides a little while rubbing, or you put it JUST that little bit off, you can't really fix much.

But it's a non issue really. Since you only get a few drys for a mg, youll still need to get waterslides unless you want to use stickers. So youd still be doing waterslides even if you like drys

its very articulated, but somehow not posable at the same time.

the head is not actually is connected to anything, but is just sitting on top of the body, so expect it to always flop out when you pose it or you open the chest multiplier. you can do the standing kick shown in promo videos, but you will have a hard time adjusting the center of balance to make it not fall down.

I dunno, I had a more fun time building the RG Crossbone than this.

Id highly suggest getting some black paint for the wings. Mine were terrible looking, you could see where the injection molds were along the entire set of wings. Might of just been mine though. Look for the waterslides on ebay, they are all basically the same so just pick which one you want

RG Crossbone is easily my favorite RG. I know the shoulders aren't great, but at the slightly smaller size it is it still impressed me more than either of the Nus. Also comes with an absurd amount of funky accessories.

Theyre bullshitting. The stickers will show the clear film even with a matte topcoat. Water decals wont after a little softer and a matte cost. I regret using stickers now that I learned how to do waterslide decals.

No. Its clear with the 01 number. Just looks like ass, doesnt blend in even with matte blasted over it. The stickers are just like that. You can trim them as much as possible but they just stand out and look bad. Water decals are definitely superior.
